Problem:

How to model Hyspan Externally Pressurized Expansion Joints?

Solution:

There are several types of Externally Pressurized Expansion Joint provided in Hyspan catalogue.

1. At appropriate location Insert the pipe Flange-1 while going to Insert > Piping Components > Flange > Double-Welded Slip-on Flange (as per your choice).

2. Insert a pipe run of required distance. Again, insert the flanges following similar steps in Step 1.

3. Insert a Flexible Joint by Insert > Piping Components > Flexible Joint. Fill the details like Length (Subtract run between flanges from Overall length given in catalogue), stiffness values, Weight (Subtract flanges weight from Total weight given in catalogue), Pressure area as per catalogue. See the screenshot given below just for reference provide your own values as per size and catalogue.

4.Then simply model flanges 3 as shown in step 1 and then insert run again flanges 4 as shown in screenshot below.

Note: For 3502 series Expansion Joint do not model flange-1 and flange -4.

Flange -5 is not considered because we have modelled a single flexible joint in this modeling approach.

B.) Follow the steps given below for 3505 Fixed Flange Dual Anchor Base and 3506 Weld End Dual Anchor Base Expansion Modelling:

Approach#1:

1. At appropriate location Insert the pipe Flange-1 while going to Insert > Piping Components > Flange > Double-Welded Slip-on Flange (as per your choice).

2. Insert a run of some distance. Again, insert the Flange-2 following similar steps in Step-1.

4.Insert pipe run and provide the anchor point at the end of the run.

5.Now repeat the above steps and produce similar model in reverse order. Insert the run same as in step 4.

6.Then insert flange 4 then flexible joint with similar properties as the first one then flange-5.

7.Insert pipe run with same distance as in step-2. Insert flange 6.

Approach#2:

1.Repeat all the steps as mentioned Approach#1. Just do not insert the Anchor in the middle of the 2 bellows arrangement on pipe run itself.

2. Create a beam property by Insert > Structure >Beam Section Properties. Fill the details like Section ID, standard /Non-Standard (user defined properties). Keep in mind to select pipe as shape and size should be more then parent size. Example shown for your reference in screenshot below.

3.Model the outside housing with the steel pipe section. For that insert the beam by Insert > Structure >Beam from flange-2 to middle anchorage point and then insert the beam pipe from anchorage to Flange -5 as shown in screenshot below.

1. Insert a segment by Insert > Piping Components >Segment (suppose the segment is F).

2.Insert Run by Insert > Piping Components >Run. Pipe run should as per expansion joints length given in catalogue from F00 >F01>F02>F03>F04>F06.As shown in screenshot below.

3. Insert a new segment by Insert > Piping Components >Segment (suppose the segment is G).

4.This G segment is to be modeled with 2 pipe properties one with a large diameter as of the outside housing diameter and other one same as the slip travelling pipe same pipe properties as Segment F pipe properties.

5. Start the modelling of segment G with larger outside diameter pipe. Connect this G segment from F02 and insert the pipe run from F02 to G01 keeping in mind GO1 node should overlap F03.

6. Similarly insert run from G01 to G02 (overlapping F04), then G02 to G03 after that G03 to G05.

7.Now while modeling G05 to G06 pipe run reduce the pipe size equal to the F segment pipe size.

8.Insert a support by Insert > Supports >Support and select the line stop connecting F01 to G01 with the appropriate gap considering the distance between F01 and G01.

9.Similarly, insert a line stop connecting F06 to G03 with the appropriate gap considering the distance between F06 and G03.

10.Now for the joint seal friction force due to graphite flakes, model an incline support in the axis of pipe with a break away force mentioned in catalogue as Joint Seal
Force. Example for 8NPS pipe we have taken 6800lbs as break away force. In this case apply an incline support at G02 (outer segment) connected to F04(Inner segment).

Note: Calculated the effective OD of the pipe used in segment G from Effective Area (square inches) given in Catalogue.
