Moving the config directory

I would like to move the config directory to our network.  We've customized some files and want all new projects to start with the customized files.  If the config directory is on everybody's C: drive, I have to make sure everybody updates the directory whenever I make changes to a file.

Does anybody know if I can do this and how do I make sure AutoPlant uses the config directory on the network whenever I start a new project.

  • Hi Richard,

One way I've handled that in the past is by opening the at.ini file on each machine and point the network root to the install files on a network share rather than the c:\ drive. This way you can manage all customizations in the same place, once rather than on each machine.

Another way you could look at this is creating a project template in Project Administrator. This way all projects will have your customizations in them. The project is the first stop for the application when it is looking for configuration files anyway.

  • Aaron,

Thanks for the reply but I'm not sure how to use your information.  First, I can't find the at.ini file.  Second, I don't know how to create a project template in Project Administrator.

I'm using AutoPlant XM Edition V 08.09.04.47.  I searched my c: drive and could not find the at.ini file and the Project Administrator does not have any obvious command to create a project template.

Please give me more information.  In passing, my first name is Gilles, my family name is Richard.

     Thanks,

     Gilles

  • Sorry about that Gilles,

The At.ini file is located here on a machine with AutoPLANT installed on it:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\Plant XM\CFG \

You can open that file in notepad. Look for the heading [ALIAS], it is usually at the top of the file. The NETWORK_ROOT variable is stored there and by default points to the install on the machine in question, i.e.:  c:\Program Files\Bentley\Plant XM. You can change this to point to a network share where you have all of the install files stored and customized, for instance: I:\Bentley installs\AutoPLANT\XM or something similar. You will need to have AutoPLANT installed at that location for it to be used. But once you change all of at.ini files on the local machines that use AutoPLANT you will be able to control all customizations from that one central location rather than on each machine.

As far as creating a template. The template used by default is stored here:

    c:\Program Files\Bentley\Plant XM\base

You will see a similar structure to that of a newly created project in that folder. You can add any customized files that you want to always be part of your project creation there, just make sure you follow the folder structure that is in the install directory. Alternately you can right-click on an exisitng project within Project Administrator and copy the structure of it to create a new project, effectively making any existing project a template for a new project.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you require any further information on this subject.
