Can plantwise be used for piping design?

I am interested in plantwise. Especially, I am interested in auto routing function.

When I asked about it, I first heard about openplant.

I am using opm now and will continue to use it.

But it seems that they are not compatible.

There are two questions.

1. Is not plantwise fit to piping design?

2. Should I use an autoplant when considering plantwise and modeling program compatibility?

  • Hello DongYoung Kim,

    Thanks for your query here.

Please find below answer to your query.

    1. Is not plantwise fit to piping design?
      - Plantwise is used for Costing/estimation projects only, where auto routing is required by providing input as start point and end point of pipes.

    2. Should I use an autoplant when considering plantwise and modeling program compatibility?
      - You can use Plantwise drawing in OpenPlant Modeler. You can get center line in OpenPlant Modeler and further use it with Intelligent Line Manger option.
Check wiki article for use of Intelligent line manager -

  • Hi,

    1) I would not say that PlantWise is used for costing. While PlantWise does provide some costing results, the intent of it is to give you relative differences to different layout options that you can explore with PlantWise. Each time you make a modification to your model, you can compare the costs. This allows you to make changes to your model and then quickly make comparisons to come to an optimal design. PlantWise is not for doing detailed design, that is better to do with OpenPlant Modeler. What PlantWise does is allow you to evaluate the layout of your plant before you start with the detailed design.

    2) We have a release of PlantWise coming in a week or so that allows you to convert all the equipment and piping from a PlantWise model into an OpenPlant model. The equipment from PlantWise is converted to either parametric equipment or custom equipment depending on the equipment types. Piping models in PlantWise can now use OpenPlant Modeler piping specifications. When the piping models are converted to OpenPlant, you will end up with a model that is the same as if you modeled it from the start in OpenPlant as they will use the same piping specifications.  The structural parts of the PlantWise model can also be exported to ProStructures and once you create an ISM, you can import the ISM into OpenPlant Modeler as well.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Thanks Tim to share details about Plantwise & its capabilities. Thumbsup

I hope this is clear to DongYoung Kim

  • Thank you for your answer.

I wonder if PLANTWISE can provide AUTO ROUTING to OPENPLANT in ADD-ON form.

Although it is not suitable for use, I would like PlantWise used for some small diameter piping during piping design work with OpenPlant.
