Hi,
I want to add a picklist to some properties using an Excel external datasource. I've implemented it based on document "How to create a pick list on EC Property using External Datasource definition" and I haven't been able to make it work yet.
Would someone have an example of how to do that? How to setup the "External Datasource Definition Mapping" custom attribute. I suspect that my problem has to do with the connection string. So far, I've tried multiple combinations based on: Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=HA_PICKLISTS.xlsx;Extended Properties="Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1".
Or is it even possible? Am I wasting my time trying to make this work? Any suggestions?
Regards
Alain
Hello Alain,
Wiki you highlighted is meant for MDB file mode. Alternatively you could attach excel file to mdb and hence call the function using the same wiki article you are using.

If you could provide your working excel file then may be we could provide further assistance on it.

Based on my testing, this custom attribute will only work with an Access database and not a Excel spreadsheet. I have created an enhancement request for this asking for support of Excel. This is not available currently.

Hi Tony,
Thank you for your quick answer.
In your enhancement request, I would also suggest to add any connection string (ODBC, OLEDB, etc.).That way we could get data from different sources, not only mdb or excel. By the way it works for SQL Server but not consistantly (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't). I created ticket 7000616720 and defect 692980 was logged. You can view this post for more details https://communities.bentley.com/products/plant/f/autoplant-axsys-openplant-plantwise-forum/132458/openplant-pid-create-pick-list-on-ec-property-using-external-datasource/404766#404766.
Meanwhile I will give a try to Rahul's suggestion of using a mdb linked to an excel speadsheet.
Thanks
I did - i asked for the custom attribute to work with a myriad of connection strings.
