Background

By default when we have pipe to pipe connection using Victaulic spec in Imperial project coupling is not placed. However, in case of pipe to elbow connection GROOVE_JOINT is created and CAM_AND_GROOVE_COUPLING is placed on the joint automatically. This article will explain what changes are required to configure the auto-placement of coupling on pipe to pipe connection.

100mm PIPE component has been taken as an example in this case.

Steps to Accomplish

Coupling is not placed automatically on the pipe to pipe connection because in Victaulic Spec, End conditions for PIPE in PIPE table are not defined and therefore PLAIN_END is assigned to both ends whereas groove joint requires IGM end conditions in order to place Cam and groove coupling. Follow the steps below to configure OPM to auto-place the coupling:

  1. Open Victaulic spec in MS-Access locally.

  2. Open PIPE Table and filter MAIN_SIZE column to show only 4" size.

  3. Further filter the EC_CLASS_NAME column to show only PIPE components.

  4. Key-in the value IGM in END_COND_1 and END_COND_2 columns as shown below.

  5. Save the changes in table and exit out of MS-Access.

Verify the Results

  1. Open a new model in Imperial project.

  2. Create a new pipeline of 4" size using Victaulic Spec.

  3. Select place pipe tool from tasks and select the pipe from Spec grid which has MALE_CAM_AND_GROOVE_END end preparations on both ends.

  4. Place a straight piece of pipe in the model.

  5. Again place a piece of pipe starting from the end of pipe placed in previous step.

  6. It will show a dialog to select the joint type as shown below:

  7. Select the GROOVE_JOINT option and click OK.

  8. Further it will ask to select the coupling from spec grid.

  9. Select the appropriate coupling and click OK. Coupling will be placed on the joint as shown below:

  10. Similarly, you can use break component to place the coupling at a certain distances if you have long run of pipe.
