Using The AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility Tool [CS]

This Client Server article is republished in its entirety from 2005 for reference purposes.

    By Bentley Technical Support Group
    22 April 2005 Modified: 28 April 2005

The AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility tool was created to accommodate AutoPLANT 2004 (08.05.00.32) users who wanted to upgrade AutoCAD 2002, or 2004 to AutoCAD 2005.

Because AutoPLANT 2004 (08.05.00.32) was released before AutoCAD 2005, it was not compatible with AutoCAD 2005 and therefore Bentley users could not upgrade to the most current version of AutoCAD. This posed a problem for users, which prompted Bentley development to create a tool allowing users to install AutoCAD 2005 on a machine and use AutoPLANT 2004 (08.05.00.32).

The AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility Tool can be downloaded from the Software Download link in the CONNECTION Center.

    The 2005 Compatibility Tool

There are many different scenarios for installing AutoPLANT with AutoCAD because there are so many versions in circulation. Below is a sampling of two of these scenarios in which the AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility Tool would be useful. The steps at the bottom of the article accommodate both of the scenarios listed below:

    Scenario 1

You have AutoCAD 2004 with AutoPLANT 2004 (08.05.00.32) installed. You would like to upgrade to AutoCAD version 2005. The install sequence below assumes that AutoCAD 2004 is already installed and will coexist with AutoCAD 2005.

    Scenario 2

You have AutoCAD 2004 with AutoPLANT 2004 (08.06.00.70) installed. You would now like to upgrade to AutoCAD 2005. The install sequence below assumes that you already have AutoCAD 2004 and AutoPLANT 2004 (08.06.00.70) installed.

    Install steps

NOTE: This install also assumes that you would like to keep AutoCAD 2004 on the machine, as well as AutoCAD 2005.

Install AutoCAD 2005 to a separate directory then AutoCAD 2004. Make sure that the licensing is set up correctly and the program can be started properly without error.
Install the Bentley Plant 2004 Edition AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility tool.
Select NEXT to install the AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility tool.
Select YES to accept the End User License Agreement.
Verify that the destination install directory is correct and select NEXT.
    Select FINISH to complete setup.
The Compatibility Tool has now added the necessary shortcuts to the Plant 2004 Desktop Shortcut icon to allow the user to select AutoPLANT 2004 for AutoCAD 2005. It has also added the necessary profiles and settings that the user will need to work successfully with AutoPLANT 2004 in AutoCAD 2005.

If the user is working on a clean machine or has cleaned off AutoCAD and AutoPLANT 2004 from a machine, the install order should be to install AutoCAD 2005, making sure to run the application once before installing AutoPLANT, then install AutoPLANT 2004 (v 08.06.00.70). In this instance, the Bentley Plant 2004 Edition AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility Tool is not needed.

The Bentley Plant 2004 Edition AutoCAD 2005 Compatibility Tool is an easy way to keep an existing install of AutoPLANT 2004 while installing a new version of AutoCAD (v2005). It eliminates the need to uninstall and reinstall AutoPLANT.

    Use these scenarios as examples.
