Overview

To Query Correct set of Bolts on WAFER LUG END Type Joint in OpenPlant Modeler.

Problem Description

In OpenPlant Modeler, Wafer Lug End Type connection can be used. For such connection, user should check if the necessary settings and data getting applied in it. User requirement was to place correct set of bolts during placing an assembly that contains a wafer lug end type component in between flanges. See below steps to resolve such problem, by checking all data at right place. 

Reason

Since WAFER_LUG_END type creates a separate Joint , it places 3 bolt graphics, 1 for Partial threaded (Longer Bolt, Wafer) connection which connects whole assembly and 2 Fully threaded connection ( Shorter Bolts, MACHINE_BOLT) at both ends. See Wafer style body. 

         

User Need to check Schemas, PCF file, Spec database etc to get correct representation. 

Steps to Resolve

1. Navigate to project folder & open Project pcf file. Say OPModeler_Metric here.
   
   
2. Search/Navigate to variable OPM_CUSTOM_WAFER_TYPE_END_PREPS
   
   
3. Check WAFER_LUG_END type defined correctly here.
   
   
   
   
4. Save & Close PCF file.
   
   
5. In class Editor Open “OpenPlant_3D.01.07.ecschema” & Supplement it with below mentioned schema.
   
   “OpenPlant_3D_Supplemental_Modeling.01.07.ecschema”.
   
   
6. Navigate to JOINT Class. 
   
   
7. Under Class Tab, Select Custom attribute “OpenPlant_Physical_JointType_Map” & Check join type [11]. Check fasteners correctly defined for WAFER_LUG_END like shown in below image. 
   
   
   
   
8. Save & close Schema.
   
   
9. Open Specification, say mEX-OPM here through MS Access mode. Open BOLT Table.
   
   Note –A fundamental knowledge of MS Access may require here
   
   
10. Check entry for both FULLY THREADED BOLTS and PARTIALLY THREADED BOLTS. See below image for reference. Also download a sample default Metric Spec for quick reference. Click here >>> to download.
    
    
    
    
11. Launch OpenPlant Modeler, Place component, say Butterfly valve and 2 WNRF Flange on both side & verify results.
    
    
12. Also check Element information. Notice 2 fully threaded and 1 partially threaded bolts has been applied. See Image below. 
    
    
    
    
13. The bolt length calculation for the shorter Bolts (Fully threaded, MACHINE_BOLT), is:
    
    Length = Flange_Thickness + Gasket_Thickness + (Valve_Length / 2) – Bolt_Gap/2
    
    
14. Whereas the length for the wafer bolt, which can be any class but MACHINE_BOLT is:
    
    Length = Opening_Flange_Thickness + Gasket_1_Thickness + Valve_Length + Gasket_2_Thickness + Closing_Flange_Thickness
    
    Note -Bolt_Gap is a property of the Lug component, if not defined, it is 1/8th of an Inch, ¼ of an Inch between the two bolts.
