Background

Sometimes user requirement is to do similar piping arrangement across different units of plant, it is an obvious choice to route piping in one unit and copy the same arrangement in other units. This article will explain the process to copy components from one model to another model and steps required to modify copied components when you are working in standalone mode.

Steps to Accomplish

  1. Consider Model A as completed project, which is needed to copy in different unit.

  2. Create new DGN file with different name say B.DGN.

  3. Attach model A into B as a reference. Go to File > References.

  4. Click Attach Reference button in References dialog as highlighted below.

  5. Attach A.DGN as reference.

  6. Select all the components or the set of components which you would like to copy over. Right click and select Copy option from context menu.

  7. Place the copied components at a required distance let's say 1000 ft.

  8. Pipelines are automatically created with same name. All the metadata is copied over correctly and all the instances (Graphical or Non-graphical) are assigned a unique GUID which eliminates the chances of duplicity.

  9. To rename the pipelines, you can select the pipeline one by one or together and edit them. For this example, we will select all the pipelines together.

  10. Change the Unit from U1 to U2 and save. All the pipelines are updated with new unit information.
