AutoPLANT drawings take an extremely long time to open using AutoCAD 2008 and AutoCAD 2009. AutoCAD 2008 and AutoCAD 2009 have a performance issue when opening a drawing with external references (Xrefs). Xref, Copy/Paste and Insert functions may also be affected.
AutoCAD 2008 and AutoCAD 2009 have a performance issue when opening a drawing with Xrefs. Xref, Copy/Paste and Insert functions may also be affected. The performance issue for OPEN manifests as a 5 to 45 minute load time. This issue is the result of drawings having excessive scales. Autodesk has acknowledged that excessive scales cause a performance problem; please refer to Autodesk knowledge base article ID: TS1072266. To correct the problem the excess scales need to be removed from all drawing. Once corrected the open time may be as low as 30 seconds.
There are 2 methods to remove the scales. Autodesk has created the Scale List Cleanup Utility to automatically reset a drawing and all its Xrefed drawing's scales. However test runs of the Scale List Cleanup Utility with AutoPLANT documents has resulted in drawings becoming completely unusable and unrecoverable. DO NOT use the Scale List Cleanup Utility on data that is not backed up and easily replaced with the backup.
The second method is to manually open each drawing and remove the scales using the command -SCALELISTEDIT. Alternatively, AutoCAD 2009 automatically purges excessive scales when a drawing is opened. Use AutoCAD 2009 to open each drawing then save the drawing. This will have the same effect as using SCALELISTEDIT. Use the following instructions on how to use SCALELISTEDIT on each drawing to correct the performance issue.
1. Open the drawing 2. Enter -SCALELISTEDIT in the command line3. Type R for the following command line prompt; Enter option [?/Add/Delete/Reset/Exit] :4. Type Y for the final command line prompt; Reset scale list to defaults? [Yes/No] :5. Save and close to preserve the changes.
Autodesk advises that AutoCAD 2008 Service Pack 1 should be installed "Nested external references (xrefs) may produce excess scales. To correct this issue, install AutoCAD 2008 Service Pack 1 or corresponding service packs for AutoCAD-based products..."
