Check the checkbox to USE SYMBOLS in the Drawing Preferences dialog accessed through the Piping Menu. Use this setting to insert a symbol for the component if it is defined.
Symbols can be associated with components by assigning the new keyword 3D_SYMBOL_NAME_FIELD to the component class in CLASS.INI as follows:
3D_SYMBOL_NAME_FIELD=SYMBOL_3D. This assignment states that the value in the SYMBOL_3D field in the components Spec record is used as the name of the symbol.
You should not replace symbol_3D with the actual name of the symbol in the class.ini. You will also need to ensure that there is not a class.ini stored on the Project level if you are making changes in the Installation version of your Class.ini. The Project will always be searched first for this information.
You will have to ensure that your symbol has a Catalog and Spec record corresponding to its Dimensions (Pay attention to the following Database Fields: COMP_LEN, PIPE_OD, FLNG_TH, FLNG_OD, COMP_OD) Obviously, Flange fields will only apply to Flanged Valves. In the Catalog record of such a component, you will need to insert the name (in this case ‘gatevlv2' File extension of dwg is not necessary) of the symbol in the SYMBOL_3D Field. Make sure to build the applicable Catalog and add the component to a Spec once these changes are made.
The orientation of your symbol in its DWG file must also be considered. It should be in the X-Y plane with the centerline of the component having a Y value of 0 and running in the Positive X direction. (Pardon my ‘home-made' UCS) Also, as mentioned in step 3, the actual DWG symbol you create MUST be dimensionally proportionate to the Catalog/Spec record assigned to it. Otherwise, your symbol is likely to be ignored when modelling.
Once the above steps are completed, the custom symbol should insert anytime it is called from the Spec.
