When a cable list is imported into Bentley Raceway and Cable Management (BRCM), a cable Type or a lookup code can be specified for each cable on the source spreadsheet. Typically, lookup codes are only used for power cables and cable types are specified for other cables such as control cables, but this is no restriction in the software.
When a lookup code is specified for a cable instead of a Type, the software can select the appropriate cable Type by using a lookup table. The selection is based on the Load and Length values assigned to the cable and is initiated by the user with the Cable Sizing tool. The Load values are specified in the cable list spreadsheet that is imported or in Cable Manager. The Length value is generally determined by the cable routing feature of the software. This document describes how to import a cable sizing lookup table from a spreadsheet. The example used in this document references the following files in the "\Detail Design\Documents" subfolder of the sample BRCM_EU_EN project.
These files are also available here.
The example will be to import a cable sizing lookup table for the "LV-400V-3_PE-VD15.Motors" lookup code.Open the CableList.xls file in Excel. Note that "LV-400V-3_PE-VD15.Motors" is specified as the lookup code for several cables:
After the cable list is imported, the lookup codes will appear in Cable Manger as values for Cable Code:
Open the CableSizing.xls file. Note that the first worksheet is labeled "LV-400V-3+PE-VD15-Motors":
The name of the worksheet is not critical, but in this case it indicates that the worksheet contains the lookup table for the "LV-400V-3_PE-VD15.Motors" lookup code seen in the CableList.xls file or in the value for Cable Code for the cable in Cable Manager.
Open IMPORT_CableSizing.xml. This file will be specified when importing the lookup table. Note that the "Sheet" tag has a value of "1" for "number", indicating that the first worksheet of whatever spreadsheet is imported will be used. In the case of this example, the first worksheet is the correct one to use.
Repeat the above process to import tables for other cable lookup codes. Modify the sheet number specified in IMPORT_CableSizing.xml to import from the appropriate worksheet of the spreadsheet.
Once the cable sizing lookup tables are imported, cables can be sized by right clicking a selection of cables in Cable Manager and selecting Cable Sizing.
The ID value for Operating Conditions (step 7 above) must match the desired lookup code (Cable Code) in order for cables to be sized by the lookup table. If the Cable Code does not match any Operating Condition ID when Cable Sizing is run, "Cable lookup table not found" will be displayed on the Cable Browser window.
If a lookup table for the cable's Cable Code is found but an appropriate Cable Type was not found, "Cable lookup failed" will be displayed on the Cable Browser window when Cable Sizing is run. In that case the lookup table could be adjusted or a Cable Type manually selected for the cable.
