Place Linear Form using Profile

Aecosim allows you to create a linear form from user defined shapes - using the 'Place Profile' tool

Creating a linear form this way allows the geometry and data to be reported using the datagroup tools.

Does GC have a tool or node similar to the 'Place Profile' tool?

What is the best way in GC to create a linear form using a user defined profile?

I am currently using a GC script to create polygons as profiles and creating a solid from that.

The disadvantage of this method is that linear lengths and quantities are not reported using the datagroup tools.

  • Hi John,

At this point in time the ABD Add.in for GenerativeComponents does not include an node type equivalent to the ABD Profile element.

However, if you want to report the length and volume of a swept profile in GC, you should be able to write out the profile paths dot Length property (e.g. myProfilePath.Length), and the resulting solid's volume (e.g. mySweptProfile.Volume). Using the ExcelRange node type (load the Bentley.GenerativeComponents.Office.dll from "Bentley Product Assemblies") with its "Write" technique, you can produce a report on profile paths' lengths and profiles' volumes.

  • Volker,

    thanks for your reply

I have been exporting the profile lengths from GC and generating a report that way.

But I was hoping to take advantage of datagroups and then use the reporting from datagroups to be consistent with other modelling done on a project.

I can also see a benefit going forward to be able to use the profile tool for linear objects that are not 'structural' or 'walls'

Are there any plans to add a node in GC to allow a user to create a profile object?

It would also appear that if you add datagroup data to a basic 'solid' generated b/w two profiles - the volume is not reported on using the datagroups reporting tool. This is just an observation and comment.

    cheers

    John
