installation problem

I am having trouble getting GC to run.  I started off installing this setup:

XM Prereq Pack 8.9.3.09

XM 8.9.4.51

TF 8.9.4.51

GC 8.9.4.76

This was off a CD so I did not know it was out of date.  Per Bentley support, I uninstalled everything and went with this:

XM Prereq Pack 8.9.4.01

Xm 8.9.4.51

TF 8.9.4.63

GC 8.9.5.50

When I try to run GC, with the older version and with the newer version, I get a fatal error when the main GC dialog box is loading up.  The error says Class Not Registered, and a dialog box pops up asking if I want to send this error to Bentley.  After sending the error report, the error occurs twice more and then Microstation aborts.  Here is a snippet from the event viewer:

Can anyone help me fix this problem?  I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything XM related on my machine several times and the error keeps coming up.  MS XM will run fine on its own, as will TF.

  • Hi Michael, sorry for the delayed response...  Is this exception error still occurring when attempting to start GC?  The versions you've installed the second time around are certainly correct, so would not seem to be the problem.  When you uninstalled the original versions, did you also delete the remaining contents?  While this is not always required, it's often a good practice.

Assuming the new install is "clean", and since MicroStation and TriForma seem to open OK, I'd have to think there is something specific to your system that is not agreeing with GC. Though what that is, I'm not sure.  Are you starting GC from the delivered shortcut?  If so, does it read something like c:\Bentley\GENERATIVECOMPONENTS\GenerativeComponents.exe -wc"D:\Bentley\TriForma\config\gclocal.cfg"?

If the shortcut is also OK, the next best step may be to submit the exception log and minidump files to Bentley Technical Support for review.  We do have a group that specializes in reviewing this type of data, so they may be able to better track down where the failure is occurring.

  • My problem is, I dont know what you mean by "remaining contents."  I dont see any files left over, and I am not sure what, if anything, to do with the registry.  If you have some more specifics in this area I would be happy to try and remove them if they are still there.  The shortcut checks out fine.

I contacted support and sent them my exception log, but no minidump.  They directed me here and to the discussion groups for help.  Is there a specific person I could contact to send these files to?

  • Once the uninstallation is over some contects in the installed folder remains...  most fo them are user files...

or workspace.  you can delete them . You can also delete the directory where you have installed the main program as well .. ideally found in programfiles\bentley\.... as Steve Cocchi mentioned these are not necessary.

I'm not sure hat you mean by "When I try to run GC, with the older version and with the newer version, I get a fatal error when the main GC dialog box is loading up......" .Do you mean GC does not run at all at your end now ? with either new version or older version ?

Does Microstation and Triforma run ok ?

    This is a test

  • That is correct, GC has never successfully run on my machine.  I have always gotten the fatal error, regardless of which version was installed.  Microstation XM and Triforma will run fine by themselves.  Would you like me to send you my minidump file?
  • I guess that could be useful info for developement here. pls send hte exception log, minidump and an screen capture of what the error is .
