I am new to 'programming' Microstation and don't know much about the behind-the-scenes sort of stuff. I am learning quite a bit, and continue to.
With that, I just installed V8i (up from XM). I cannot get my 'drawing' tablet to preserve the arrangement I want. XM does fine. 8i doesn't. What do I have to do to set up my 'user preference?'
Just to be clear, could you describe what you mean by "I cannot get my 'drawing' tablet to preserve the arrangement I want"? And what you did in MicroStation V8 XM Edition that is not working in MicroStation V8i?
I am trying to become more fimiliar with the inner workings of Microstation. Hence, beginner. Therefore, my terminology may be completely off in the mean time as I try to build my vocabulary. I just installed V8i...XM was installed by another manager along with my preferences...he does not know why MicroStation is not pointing to the file needed. Instead of relying on him along with building my skills as a future administrator, I thought I could start taking this stuff on myself.
I believe I am inquiring about the 'user preferences' file....my questions are, where is that located, how do I get Microstation V8i to point to it whenever I open it, and how do I modify these preferences?
The problem is everytime I open V8i, I set up the tool bars and settings to fit my 'preferences,' close out, and when I reopen V8i, it 'defaults' back to the 'out of the box' desk top....preferences or whatever it is called.
On another note, instead of relying principly on the forums for technical information to build my skills, what references could I start using to build my knowledge base on becoming an administrator for my firm?
Hi JarrHedd,
Does your login have administrative rights? Without admin rights, the user preferences are not written to the system folder, hence they are reset when you reopen Microstation.

The default install should put user prefs in the user profile under documents and settings. %appdata%\Bentley\MicroStation\8.11\prefs\ to be exact. This depends upon config; msconfig uses:
_USTN_HOMEROOT : $(_USTN_LocalUserAppDataPath) _USTN_HOMEPREFS : $(_USTN_HOMEROOT)prefs/
