MDL compiler bug in switch statements - undocumented case limit

I have been getting a very weird crash in a switch statement that disappears when I compile natively. Basically when my code exits the switch statement (even if I comment out all executable code), the return from the function jumps to a random code address. It is therefore stack corruption, but it appears that it is the switch statement that causes it, and not any code in the switch statement.

My code does very little and is certainly not to blame as the same crash occurs when I comment out all executable code. The crash also disappears if I remove a lot of the switch cases, even though they are never called. The switch statement itself has a large number of cases, as it is used to generate focus help strings for a dialog box with many tab pages and dialog items. Testing reveals that the stack corruption occurs around the 280th case statement, if I comment out code passed this point then it doesn't corrupt the call stack. 

Since some of the case statements are grouped together, I would guess that there is a limitation of around 256 unique case statements allowed in an MDL switch statement before stack corruption occurs. Has anyone seen a similar thing? I am guessing no one at Bentley will bother to fix an MDL compiler bug since development seems to have halted in MDL, but I thought I would bring this limitation to the attention of other programmers who might waste hours like I did trying to find the source of the problem. It can be replicated on MS2004, XM and V8i when compiled using MCOMP, but not when compiled with VC++.

  • I can't regenerate your situation. I created a switch statement with 300 cases in my .mc file, it can work correctly. Have you specified -s parameter in your MKE file ? If it is true, please remove it.

    Yes I have the stack size set as:

    -s9000000

    I kept having to bump this up in previous versions of MicroStation or I risked exhausting the stack during batch processing operations over multiple DGNs. If the stack option is no longer required, can you confirm which version of MicroStation it became redundant in, so I don't break backwards compatibility? I know it was required under MicroStation J; not sure how long after that though.

    In any case this is a red-herring, I have since removed the stack setting, cleaned and rebuilt and still get the crash. When I break up the switch statement again it stops crashing. Re-enabled and again crashes, so there is no doubt it is the switch statement blowing away the stack. Did you make sure to put a printf() or similar for each case? Otherwise I think the compiler may optimise your switch code away. If you still can't replicate, please send me your code and I will test here.

    I did some research with the developer of the compiler code.  We would like to know if your cases are consecutive integers or some "random" spacing between values?

    I can't seem to make your code crash when I insert it into my switch code, so there's definitely more going on than I thought. Each of my cases is calling a function to update a multiline listbox and this seems to be related to the crash; however when I change your code to call the same function it doesn't crash, so it seems to be a combination of the structure of my switch statement (large numbers in random order) and the multiline text code.

    My switch is on a dialog item ID, which varies greatly between 33000 and 39000 in no particular order. The multiline code is below. It seems to be fine until the code tries to exit the current function, which is when the stack has obviously blown.

      and a typical case statement is below:

    The string is fine, no funny formatting there and usually quite short. The code is usually called from a dialog item hook, but it also crashes if called anywhere else. It always crashes after the first entry into the switch, unless I break the switch up as mentioned originally. If you still can't find the problem, let me know and I will email you the code directly.

  • Do you have an exception.log file that can provide a call stack to look into what is happening?

  • Hi Mark, I'll see if I can create one. Usually it just blows the stack, so on function exit it jumps to a random line in my code while I'm tracing it through the MDL debugger. Since MDL captures the crash (illegal opcode) it doesn't crash MS. If I can get it to happen I'll send it, though it's probably of limited use.
