When opening a DWG file within MicroStation how does it happen? Does the DWG get converted into a DGN file when it is opened, or does the DWG get natively processed through RealDWG?
The reason for asking, I am wanting to access the title block tags/attributes of a DWG but I am not sure if I should access them the same way as a DGN, and go through the model then scan for elements?
Hi Mervin Bowman,
Jan is correct that within MicroStation (and APIs) you can simply treat DWG elements as DGN elements (remapped on-the-fly, no full intermediate translation files necessary); however you will want to become familiar with the workflows and constraints listed under "Working with DWG Data".

Thank you, Jan for the quick reply and detailed answer.

The process is the same as when DGN file is opened.

Well, how exactly is implemented is an internal (not published) feature, but you can imagine the process as DWG objects are on the fly mapped, through abstraction layer, to DGN features.

Yes, you can. From API perspective, there is no difference between DGN and DWG data. The only difference can be that some features are not supported by DWG, or in some cases, DWG features are transformed e.g. as read-only.

In the past (V8 and early CE versions), block properties were represented as tags in MicroStation. But now, depending on DWG options, they can be represented as tags or as Item Types.
