the api docs have a aaApi_SelectDocumentsByProjectID call but i cant find an equivalent api call for populating a dynamic data buffer.
is this just missing?

I don't see an exact equivalent, but have you tried aaApi_SelectDocumentDataBufferByProp()?
If aaApi_SelectDocumentByProjectID() works best for your needs, you probably can use aaApi_DmsDataBufferSelect(). I think I used this one years ago, but not recently, so you will have to try it out to see if it does what you need.

ended up using aaApi_SelectDocumentDataBufferByProp.
i can see why there is not direct equivalent as there would be no point since aaApi_SelectDocumentDataBufferByProp does that and more.
