PW Extraction Temp Directory

I apologize if this questioned has been asked before, I did a search for ProjectWise Extraction and could not find the answer so here it goes.

Is there a reason why the directory ExtractionTempDir on our ProjectWise server is filling up and not being automatically deleted?  The directory is close to 190 GB and I thought this is just a temporary location used for the extraction process.

If it can be deleted that is great, but I think this has happened before and if there is a setting I missed I would sure like to know.  I know disk space is cheap but....

  • Ours does this as well.  It leaves a file when the extractor hangs on the file and times out. I wrote something to delete files that were older than 2 days and scheduled it to run every day.
  • Dean,

Appreciate the response.  I hope that this will be something that is fixed or as an addtion to orchestration framework.  There could be a lot of functionality added to this module.

  • Sean, Dean,
Automated File Processors (APF) are going great lengths trying to ensure that every file that is put into the temp directory for extraction gets eventually deleted both in extraction success and failure. If there are cases that are overlooked, then we would like to be aware. Directory listing with accompanying log OF files would be very helpful.

There are few cases when files in the temp directory get out of AFP control: a) when satellite files are created by the3rd party components employed by AFP that AFP is not aware of, and b) when AFP messages queues (MSMQ) are manipulated directly by the user. For a) we do not really have a recipe, for b) we advise not to do so.

AFP does not currently have anything for temp directory blind wipe-out implemented; and we hesitate to add any. Note that the temp directory may be retargeted at will. Deleting files what we are not 100% sure about the ownership is a very dangerous business. We'd prefer not to be accountable for any data loss.

Please also note, that many files in temp directory may indicate that AFP is setup to process too many documents in one pass; those may not be lost files. In general I'd advise to configure AFP to run frequently, having "Check for updated documents every.." set to 1 minute, and only set as many documents for a pass as needed to keep the server busy for slightly above 1 minute, to ensure maximum efficiency.

Any files in temp directory are only interesting to AFP for a time shorter than specified in "Retry extraction in...". I personally see nothing wrong in either manual or admin - scheduled directory cleanups. Admin is always best aware if there are no other users sharing the same directory with AFP.

    hope this helps any.

  • Dear Audrius,

We are suffering from a similar problem. I edited the the registy key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bentley\ProjectWise\Automated File Processing\ExtractionTempDir to move the directory to a location with more space du to my server having zero byte free.. But I see projectiwse is copying out all the files 23 times (each) to the extraction directory. One file is 160MB the files are not being cleaned up. I did not see this issue in previous version of projectwise. all the files belong to projectwise could there be somthing wrong with my settings ?
