Windows Search Service is a new indexing solution that is included in Windows Server 2008 as a role service in the File Services role. It creates an index
of the most common file types on your server—such as e-mail, contacts, documents, multimedia, and other formats extended by non-Microsoft files.
Indexing Service is an indexing solution that is included with Windows Server 2008, and was part of previously released Windows Server 2003.
Can I install both indexing solutions?
You cannot install Windows Search Service and Indexing Service on the same computer. Both indexing solutions consume system resources when they
are actively indexing volumes and folders—having both of them running at the same time, could considerably affect system performance.
You would need to use Windows Search if you want to Setup Windows 2008 32 bit or 2008 R2 Server 64 bit to enable ProjectWise Select Series to do full
text search or File Properties of .msg files. Windows Search would need to be ”temporarily” enabled on the Server 2008 in order to install necessary IFilters for
Microsoft Office and .msg IFilter.
1 Navigate to Server Manager and click Add Roles, Install File Services (Fig1)
2 Under Role Services make sure Windows Search is installed (Fig2)
3 Install the Add-in for Outlook saved mail (.msg file) indexing from Microsoft site below:
Validate the install by navigating to control panel, and selecting Programs and Features; there should be a Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for Outlook is installed
4 Now Remove search role (reboot of the server is required)(Fig4)
5 Now add the indexing Service from Role Services.(Fig5)
You are now ready to index and do file property extraction via ProjectWise with Configuration in
the ProjectWise Admin module and ProjectWise Orchestration Framework configuration.
