We have been working with a number of clients using ProjectWise Client. We recently we told we needed to use Connect for a new Client. At the end of the install, it told me that our Bentley Hosted License did not contain any valid license for PW Connect Edition and as such, it would run in trial mode.
What has changed or what is it about PW licensing that I do not understand?
TIA
Hi caddcop
Beginning with PW CONNECT Edition version 10.00.01.67, it will license under the V8i passport entitlement or the CONNECT Edition entitlement. What version of PW Explorer are you using? Can you provide a screen shot of the message? Also, do you know if the PW Admin is requiring you to provide your own license or are you using thiers? That setting is not new to ProjectWise Design Integration, however more organizations are requiring their externals ot provide their own licenses. Below is from the PWCE Update 1 announcement on Bentley Communities:
New Licensing concept
This release has a new license capability and it will accept Select entitlements (V8i passport) or a CSS entitlement (CE Visa). So with that said this is the upgrade path for all existing users regardless of their contract however if they do not have a CSS entitlement then the Cloud services will be gated. V8i Passport users will get all new maintenance and Application integration improvements
Regards,
Phil
Keeping in mind that we have multiple clients, how would we use a client license when offered vs using a passport license when it is not?
I see 14 Connection Passports on our license file.
The Help About says the version number is 10.00.02.96
I only saw the message during activation after install. I do not know how to retry activation for PW. I do not see any license management tools in the PW interface.

The admins of the datasource can control if you need to provide your own license or can use one of theirs. It’s a user setting, this is not new with the connect client.
it sounds like all your previous clients were providing you licenses and this latest one isn’t. The setting controlling this is per user on the datasource.
To check the activation status on your local machine, open the license management tool found in the install directory of ProjectWise Explorer. The default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\ProjectWIse\bin\licensetool.exe. If you have not already done so on that machine, to enter your select server name and activation key, select tools>options and enter it there. If you have already entered the server name and activation key, and ProjectWise Explorer is not showing a status of activated in the license tool, you can highlight the application name and select the "activate" button in the lower right hand corner. If it fails to activate for any reason, the "Status Description" will provide the reason why it failed to activate.
I know this is some two and a half years later, but I've got an odd situation that relates to this question.
We are working with a sub- a small shop - and they own one PW CONNECT License on a CSS. When they connect to other, larger firm's datasources, no issue. Yet when they connect to ours - which is set to have users deliver their own PW licenses - they get Error 58510, indicating "Your ProjectWise use profile requires that you activate this ProjectWise product using the SELECTServer setting configured on this workstation." Thing is, they can't - they never received an activation key, as their products do not license using SELECT Server; it's all Subscription Entitlement Service (SES) through CONNECTION Client. They received Error 58510 running the 01.67 build, and still do with the 03.262 build.
I had the user run the license management tool (C:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin\licensetool.exe), and it shows no licenses at all. I assume this is WAD because their licenses are SES based. I also asked the user to provide their license log, and another error came up indicating "License Log filnot found. Please run your application first."
I strongly suspect the larger firms are extending PW usage to this small company. Is there a reason the PW Explorer software would refuse to license on an older Integration Server (V8i SS4 refresh)? I am able to license fine on our datasource using the 03.262 build, myself. Might there be any other reason for what we're seeing?
Hi jcallicott, for the example above, the licensing is the same regardless of the server/client combination. There are no known compatibility issues. PW Explorer does not yet support SES licensing so they will need an activation key on the machine to use client based licensing. A PW Explorer version that supports SES is due later this year. I would suggest they contact Bentley licensing support and ask for the activation key associated with their organization.
Phil, I was curious and wanted to check in: has the PW Explorer Client been upgraded to use SES licensing yet? I looked at the list of application at https://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/40113/products-using-subscription-entitlement-service but didn't see it, so I am assuming not.
Hi jcallicott, not yet, but the release is planned for Q4 2020. I will be presenting on the September SIG on what's new in the upcoming releases. If you are interested in a preview build, please send me a message here.
Well i can confirm that this is still an issue in connection client version 11.00.01.19 & Projectwise Explorer version 10.00.03.298
I am fairly certain i have narrowed the problem to Bentley Licensing Tool and activation wizard not changing Projectwise license type from Trial to Commercial.. When the host Projectwise server issues a usage license there is no problem, however if the Projectwise Server requires Projectwise Explorer to provide its own Visa, it is NFG! So frustrating, Bentley has one of the most complex licensing and user Un-friendly experience i have ever used..
