Projectwise Explorer, Broken X-REF's, and 0 KB files

We are having a problem with AutoCAD X-Ref's in Projectwise Explorer.  At times (we think it is usually around windows updates, but we are not tootally sure on that) in that they do a few different things.  Some lose their PW connectivity but still retain the xref in the dwg file, others however when opened cause the file to have a file size of 0 and the drawing size invalid.  When this happens we can restore from backup, and if we release all the x-ref's (usually we have to open it in regular autocad, not launched from Projectwise) and release them in PW after that is done, then it opens just fine and we can then re-attach the x-ref's.  A Projectwise reference scan usually fixes the first result without much trouble, but the 0 KB files are making us lose a lot of work.  What's puzzling is that it doesn't happen to the vast majority of files, and not even all files in a folder, usually just one, so we can't really understand what it is about these x-ref's that is causing this.  AutoCAD should prevent us from creating any circular links, so i'm not sure where to look to prevent this.  Listed below are all our versions

    AutoCAD 2007
    Plant Framework 8.9.4.47
    Projectwise 8.9.4.89

Please log the solution given by Bentley back to this posting.  We have seen this as well.  It comes and goes, and I agree with your statements regarding what happens, and what the solutions are.

This sounds like what I am experiencing with some AutoCAD files that have tif files attached. When I open them up (outside of ProjectWise) they look great (using MicroStation V8 XM) but when I copy them over into PW they seem to lose the association with the tif file. I can see the dgn file but the tif does not show up. I then tried running the Scan Ref on the dwg but that just screws it up more and get an error message that states "is not in a recognized file format".

I am using ProjectWise 08.09.04.63 and Citrix Presentation Server 4.

One of my fixes was to export the dwg file to dgn and it works just fine then after copying it into ProjectWise. Another fix I did was to take the title block that they had on the Layout1 view and copy it over to the Model view.

The issue seems to be with how Bentley ProjectWise deals with AutoCAD drawings that use the different paper spaces (Model and Layout1 views).

      Hi All,

I helped a user out who was seeing a similar issue when running scan references, the master file was changing to 0 bytes:
We narrowed it down to version specific and file specific issue. Not all files were changing but a handful. We tried to reproduce this  in 08.11.05.xx and SelectSeries 1 (08.11.07.xxx) and could not. I created a problem solution in our Knowledge Base:

      Problem:
Running scan for references on specific files changes the master file to a 0 byte files.
This issue was narrowed down to be a file specific issue & version specific on products.

      TR Number: 286556
Product: ProjectWise Client V8 XM Edition
      Version: 08.09.04.89
Area: Scan for References, Problem ID#: 41513, TROUBLEREPORT
See Also: ProjectWise Explorer, References, Attachments

      Solution:
      TR# 286556

Workaround: If the file is can be  purged and then audited: Utilites --> DWG --> Audit
through the GUI interface or  you can key in the Audit information as well:

      Options for running DWG Audit:

To run DWG Audit on multiple DWG files, set up and run a batch process (Utilities > Batch Process). In the command file, key in:

      dmsg action ok

      mdl keyin:

      DWGDIRECTAPP DWG AUDIT

The first line (dmsg action ok) dismisses the DWG/DXF Units alert dialog box that appears when you open a DWG file. If you have turned off the display of this dialog box, do not add this line to the command file.

To run DWG Audit without being prompted to fix errors, use the DWG AUDIT FIX key-in.Key-in:

      DWg audit fix
