Navigator i-model Export settings using Revit plug-in

    Hello,

We are a large community college district, and are currently rolling out ProjectWise and Navigator across our 10 campus sites for use on Project Collboration, Data Management, and BIM workflow.

Currently, we are in the midst of our Navigator training sessions and really like the tool, but continue to run in to some issues that are impacting our workflow.  Our BIM standard allows our contracted AEC teams to deliver projects to us in any IFC compliant software, and many of our local teams are using Revit for their design and construction models.  As an owner, we would like to begin using Navigator as a BIM review tool to markup design and constructability issues, analyze the data within the models, and walk our college stakeholders through the models as part of our review process.

The biggest issue we are running in to with the Revit to i-model workflow is the ability to prep these models properly for a design review within Navigator.  Ideally, what we would like to see is when the model is exported from Revit to i-model using the Bentley revit plug in, is the ability to retain in i-model,  the material attributes and colors that were assigned to the model within Revit.  While in most cases material data can be displayed, the conversion to i-model assigns a level color overlay that overrides the material color.

Upon export, we would like the ability to have i-model ignore that level color assignment and retain the material finish.  We have tried to update this in Revit upon export, and also within Navigator by modifying the display styles.   To date, we have not been able to find an easy answer.  While, we may be able to "re-assign" material finishes, this is a bit of re-work we should not have to do.  We have also tried assigning materials and views within the i-model composer but it seems like the functionality is quite limited in here.

Does any one have any suggestions?  Are we doing something wrong or is there a quick setting in we just keep overlooking?

    1. How the i-model appears (by default) when exporting from Revit using i-model plug-in

    2.  How we would like the model to look (more or less) upon export, with materials shown

    May 24,2012 - UPDATE

Sad to say, I did have not received any responses to my post as of yet. However, over the past few days, I was able to figure at least one part of my own post,
which I will share. In prepping our i-model exported from Revit for a design review in Navigator, we decided the best approach would be to use i-model
composer to set any global changes to the model we wanted all users to see or not see, and then publish an updated i-model with the changes.

As noted before, when using the i-model plug in for Revit, the export uses the dwg export settings within Revit to assign certain components to levels within
the Navigator environment. While we have still not been able to figure out how to use a custom export setting in Revit for export to Navigator (we can do it
for a .dwg or .dgn without data), we are taking the default export setting Navigator provides us as a starting point.

This means by default, Navigator will assign a color to each component assigned a level based upon the export settings. If you do not want to manipulate what
you see in Navigator, then you should open the i-model(s) within i-model composer and use the "Level Display" and "Level Manager" tools to prep the model.

In our case, we wanted to see actual materials not level colors, so in those i-models exported from Revit we used the Level Manager within i-model composer
to select the models and then changed the level color to "0."

For those components with materials assigned, we were now able to see the finish material instead of the level color. In those same models, we used the
"Level Display" tool to turn off levels we did not want to see (i.e. 2D details, construction lines, text and notes, fine detail components that weigh down the model).

The trick to getting the level display to stick and display properly within Navigator, is to change the setting in the "Type of On/Off Switch" to "Global Freeze"
and then turn off those levels you do not want to see.

Then create a new task, publish a new "i-model" and open up in Navigator. We have found these global changes  seem to work well in i-model .dgns where
materials have been assigned, but we are still having issues overriding colors for .dwg models.

That's as far as we have made it thus far. Still hoping to hear from anyone else doing this type of workflow so we can compare/exchange notes.

Change Request '331392' has been filed and it maybe considered in future releases of IMPR. In the current i-model plugin for Revit, the layer mapping is hardcoded to use AIA layer standard and cannot be reconfigured.
