Local Document Organizer: Smart Refresh

Is there a way to get the LDO to refresh the locally copied files a bit more selectively.

We are working on a large project with most files stored offsite, and are suffering from long load times. I am wondering if there was a way to:

1. Define a volume which will be used by PW to select all models that are contained or crossing the volume. I think the old Triforma MCS / Plantspace did something similar.

2. List of most often loaded/referenced files.

3. Allow the user to provide a list of files (incl their nested attachments).

4. List of loaded/referenced files for a given time period.

The user/admin would then be able to batch a re-fresh his local cache every night... so that most Refs would be loaded from the local hard drive and not over the network.

  • I'm not quite sure I understand the question, but I'd ask if the "Leave Local Copy on Check In" setting is enabled for these users.  It seems if this was enabled in this way, ProjectWise would load at least those files off the hard drive, assuming they have not changed.

  • We already have that. I would like to go one step further.

Due to various reasons, loading the files across the network is slow. What would be good if the Local Copies can be re-freshed 'pre-emptively' during the night or whenever the network is less subscribed.

There is already a manual means to re-fresh the Local Copies. But, over time the number of Local Copies on the users hard drive can be quite a lot. What would be good is some sort of 'smart' controls over what gets re-freshed to keep the network loading down.

  • As far as I know Bentley has three solutions to this issue.

      1. Delta File Transfer - Using "Leave Local Copy on Check In" and DFT turned on for the data source, it will update many files by updateing the small difference rather than the whole if it resides locally on the comptuer.

      2. Caching Server - This houses a local cache of files that will be transfered to the machine if the cached file is the same or newer date than the server - But the upload goes to the server and the cache.

      3. Fetching Batch program - ProjectWise has a fetch program you can batch run to pre-cache the files from your server to the caching server or another machine.

We do a lot of transfer over a WAN and DFT works fairly well for us.
