Working with PW a lot in the last week. Too many times, I'd select to open a file and not realize nothing was going to happen until I hit the OK button on refreshing the references. I'd really like to be able to have it read a variable and automatically load any reference files, updating any that are out of date with no user interaction.
there are variables just for this (and other useful actions too)
see MCM.CFG in the Proejctwise\Bin directory there are notes and examples that can be added to your micorstation files.
We have the auto update references running just as you are looking for running and a umber of refernece file options from the MCM.CFG to speed things up for our remote users..
Well, I found the file, but its name seems to be mcm.user.cfg. However, my edits did not seem to result in any changes in operation. I confirmed the ones I was interested in were set in the configuration variable dialog box, too

I am sure the file should be named MCM.CFG and the file PW.CFG in MicroStation\config\appl references this MCM file
if the PW.CFG file is not present you micorstation\proejctwise connection is not instaled correct (micorstation first then projectwise)
note you can copy/paste the example variable from MCM into you own micorstation cfg file and so create an override
Not according to the help/readme nor the contents of the MCM.CFG file. PW.CFG includes MCM.CFG and MCM.CFG includes the MCM.USER.CFG file - looking in a couple of places.
The office I am currently working in has some type of block on the internet. I can use the simple reply box only. If I try to use the Advance Reply Editor, it opens but the Post button does not work, the attach files tab does not work, the preview tab does not work. So I cannot start a thread from work nor can I post images from work.
What I am seeing is the variable in the MCM.USER.CFG file controls background updating of reference files, not the initial reference file update/checkout box that opens when you select a file to open. I prefer the manual update while in MicroStation - using the pencil icon in the reference file dialog box. But that one that opens as you first enter a file - that is one dialog box I would prefer to simply do its job and not bother me. I will go to open a file and while waiting go to do something and when I get back, there is that dialog box, holding up the whole show, waiting for me to say OK. GRRRRR!
Is this the dialog you are referring to? This is controlled by the ProjectWise user setting in the "user interface" section, "Show Select Reference Documents dialog"
As far as the mcm.cfg vs mcm.user.cfg, in pre-SS4 versions it was called mcm.cfg, starting in SS4 it was changed to mcm.user.cfg
from the help file under Whats New in SELECTseries 4
"Configuration variables that were formerly delivered in the mcm.cfg file are now delivered in a file called mcm.user.cfg. The mcm.cfg file is still delivered, however it now only contains system setup settings and should not be edited by the user. Both files are installed to the \ProjectWise\bin folder. "

Hi, I understand this was an old post but wondering if there is a way to disable this "show Select Reference Documents Dialog" Where would I find ProjectWise user setting in the "user interface" section to disable it? thanks for any help. Using PW V8i SS4
It's under User Interface. Note that the PW administrators can prevent you from seeing or changing these settings so it may not be there for you. After logging in look at Tools > Options. Click the Settings tab on that dialog. If you see the User Interface section, click the + next to it.
