PW local workspace copy - behaviour/when to purge?

    Hi All,

we're running PW with integrated Microstation, OpenPlant Modeler etc.

I understood that, when opening documents from within PW explorer they are copied to local - along with their related workspace files.

In our workspace we had recently added a new DGNLIB and removed an old one. I experienced, that setting from the old DGNLIB was still "active".
While browsing through the local copy of the workspace I found out, that the old file is still stored locally, and the new file is in the same directory.

In case of workspace configuration variables that point to paths instead of files a.m. behaviour ends up in applications using old and new configuration settings together.

My expectation was, that the local workspace in use is always looking like the PW stored workspace. In fact, the local workspace is a sum of workspaces.

Is something wrong with PW workspace download/local copies? Or do I have to ask all users to purge their local workspace, whenever I made change?
BTW: When should local workspace be purged in general?

Thanks for your answers in advance.

    Thorsten.

      Hi Thorsten,

When a user opens a file that has a managed workspace, it updates the files from the server that have changed. I am not aware of a setting that will make it remove files during that syncronization that are removed in ProjectWise. In Explorer if you delete the file in ProjectWise, it does not delete the copies of that file off of computers that the file has been copied to.  At that point it becomes an unmanaged file where it has been copied.  I suspect that the workspaces work in a similar fashion. They will let you update a file from PW when you sync. I don't know of a setting that will totaly mirror the files during a sync, removing files that were removed from ProjectWise.  Post the version of ProjectWise that you are using and someone may know if that version has a setting or not.

      Thanks DeanLyon.

My PW version is 08.11.11.574 (Ss4).

Does anyone know a switch, that syncs local with PW-stored workspace?

If there's none, I would say it is a bug of the managed workspace feature, because settings from local could overrule settings from PW without further notice.

In the meantime I have to advise all users in my CAD Environment to purge their entire workspace, whenever I removed a file in PW workspace.

      Hi Thorsten,

I am not aware of any switch to do this.  The managed workspace functions essentially as a copy out, which means the files are unmanaged in terms of ProjectWise.

We've run into the exact same situation as you have.  Fortunately the group wasn't large so getting the word out to purge the workspace was easy, albeit a bit frustrating.

      Thanks for this information, Scott.

We have teams on 3 continents (US, Europe, Asia) running the same PW. For me it is not only a bit frustrating.

I hope Bentely considers this behaviour as an issue. Or they should address their advertisment to small companies/teams.

      Regards.

      Thorsten.
