Audit trail for document shows no Create action

I have a document where the first log entry is Modified.  How can this happen ? Should it not always start with Created ?

( I have checked that I am looking at all all actions for all users and and all dates)

Have you checked the settings at the datasource level to make sure that the Document Create event is captured in the audit trail?

The audit trail is set to log all document events and keep them for a year, and then move them to a secondary table.

But I see a setting here "Copy audit trail records along with copied documents" that is not enabled. It sounds as if this would account for the uncreated documents...

Because you are moving audit trail data to a secondary table, that may explain why you aren't seeing the creation event if the document(s) in question were created more than a year ago. Audit trail data moved to a secondary table does not show up in the audit trail data you see/search in ProjectWise. Only data from the primary audit trail table is accessible from PW.

Also, be VERY careful with the "Copy audit trail records along with copied documents" setting. It doesn't work the way you think. It does exactly what it says - focus on copy. If you create a new document using another PW document as a source, that is essentially a copy. So when you do that, the *new* drawing will also have a copy of all of the audit trail data of the source attached to it. So if a document has 20 audit trail records, the new document gets the same 20 records to start, so you'll now have 40 audit trail entries (20 for each document). Subsequent audit-able activity is appended as normal. Then it becomes very confusing when you look at the audit trail data later. That *new* document will have audit trail data that pre-dates its creation, and it may not be entirely clear that is what happened. I always advise against enabling this setting except in the rarest of circumstances when it makes sense. Most of the time, it does not.

We have an extension to show old audit trails from the secondary table.

But "Copy audit trail records along with copied documents" doesn't seem to be relevant anyway. When I copy a document normally, the new audit trail starts as expected with a Created action, even when the setting is disabled. So I have no explanation for how a document can have an audit trail but no create event.

If you can't see the create event in either primary or secondary audit trail data for older documents, perhaps ProjectWise wasn't configured to log the document creation event when those documents were created? At least it appears that it does log it correctly now for you.
