Sort order in folder pane

Why do ProjectWise sort folders differently in the Folder and the File Pane (left and right view pane). (see parent folder 12 Gældende grundlag in image below)

In the folder pane A comes before 0 (wrong sort order) but in the file pane 0 come before A (witch is correct according to the ASCII value).

Can I influence the sort order in the folder pane, because it is sorting wrong?

Anyone ?

Cheers

  • Hello Finn, I am not sure why this is happening. I don't believe you can influence the sort order in the folder pane, but I will look into this and get back to you later today. Can you provide the full version number of ProjectWise you are using. I see it says SelectSeries 4 in the screenshot, but if you can please provide full version number. Thanks. Dana

  • Hi Dana, Yes it looks strange and the users get confused.
The full version number on my ProjectWise Explorer is: 08.11.11.574. I know there are (at least one) newer version, but this is the version we have installed at all our users desktop.

  • Hello Finn
Thank you for providing the version number.
There is a user setting under the interface section called “Display descriptions”. Is this turned on or off for the users?
(In PW admin, right click a users account, properties, settings, expand Interface).

Please check the "12A folders description.. I think you will find it is "129A"
With the "Display descriptions” setting on, the user will see the Folder descriptions in the name rather then the actual Folder name in the right pane.

  • Hi Dana

The exact folder has been change, proberly by the document controller, so I can't tell if your are right about your assumptions, but I have created another example for you. This time it sorts the same way in both the folder and the file pane but incorectly.

If you see the screendump, you will notice that 1A XX is placed in the top before 10 XX, but ABC is placed after 12 XX.

The correct order should be: 10XX, 11 XX, 12 XX, 1A xx and then ABC.

I can't figure out how the sorting is done. If numbers have higher priority than letters it is wron, but if letters have higher priority than numbers it is wrong too.

BTW ther are no descriptions on any of the folders, and the display of description is turned off for this user.

  • Here is what I think is happening. ProjectWise folders use an alpha-numeric sort order. When it looks at the folder names you are using, ProjectWise first looks to determine if the starting character is a number, in this case it finds several, it finds the numbers 1, 10, 11, and 12. Those are then listed first in numeric order. the number 1 is less then the number 10. If you take this same list of folders and create it in Windows it will sort it the same way as you see in ProjectWise.

    HTH,

    John
