    Hi,

We have an existing PW SS3 on windows 2003 server box and we are planning to upgrade it to PW SS4 on windows 2008 R2 SP1 server. I did manage to install PW SS4 on a test environment using the IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE but I am a bit confuse on the upgrade section.

can you please show the steps here?

    thanks,

    Jessie

      Hi JessieMCS,

So I am assuming you have your database backed up and your new server has PWSS4 Installed.

      1. Connect your database on your database server in a new database (rename it something other than the production)
      2. On the PWSS4 test server create a ODBC connection to the database you just connected (backup database)
      3. Launch a command prompt as a administrator and (change directory to the ProjectWise\Bin folder) c:\program file\bentley\projectwise\bin and type in the following:

         DMSCONV -d ODBC_datasourcename -u ODBC_username -p ODBC_password

Thia dmsconv.exe utility will start the upgrade process. Once upgrade as been successfully completed in the command prompt window

      4. Launch ProjectWise Administrator and login to complete the schema update (tables updating) it will prompt you to upgrade tables and select 'YES'

      5. Once done you will be upgraded.

      Thanks,

      Ranveer

      Hi Ranveer,

just to make it clear. All the steps you have mentioned will be done in the Test environment server (PW SS4)?

Correct if the storage area is connected off on another site server in your network. You will need a caching server installation.
Along with that you will also need to setup gateway entries.
Please read these articles they do a fantastic job of explain all of this.

      Hi Jessie & Ranveer,
Updating user working directory in cloned datasource is good practice as well. Test datasource restored of a copy of production carries over setting for work directory path and other. File transfer operation on cloned datasource will populate users working directory on workstation, depending on the settings unwanted test changes may creep into Production.
Another thing to look for any application specific configuration that use resources not in ProjectWise, like plant database or shared drive. Review such and make sure these are cloned and repointed correctly.

Agree! any Bentley product other than ProjectWise, if installed, on the server configuration should be looked at too. Thanks Kestas

I clicked on "Verify Answer" by mistake. Hopefully the undo function worked.

My intent was to "like" Kestas' suggestion to update user working directories on a cloned datasource as you don't want any datasources "sharing" the exact same location since you could overwrite "production" data (files) while testing the "cloned" datasource. Same reason why you want to change the storage area locations for the cloned datasource.
