ProjectWise document checkout without DMS directories

    Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to set documents to be checked out into their specified Working Directory without going into a numbered DMS sub-directory. A project I'm administering requires the Revit model files to be checked out of ProjectWise into a particular directory and it is strongly preferred they don't go into a numbered DMS sub-directory within this area.

    Thanks in advance,

    Philip Las Gourgues

ProjectWise requires the use of the dms folders. Are you using the ProjectWise Revit integration for this project? that should handle any issues you might have regarding this.

Hi Molly. No, we're not able to use Revit integration in this instance unfortunately. Are there any known work arounds for automating file copy out of, or avoiding altogether, the DMS folders? I'm concerned the users will be lax in checking files back into ProjectWise if they have to manually copy to and from the DMS folder every day.

No, for ProjectWise to function correctly, the dms folders have to be used. Any manual interaction with the local working directory can effect in data loss and should be avoided all together. The recommended solution is to integrate Revit with ProjectWise, is there any specific reason that can't be done?

      Hi Molly,

Some of the parties working on the project have had issues in the past so there's a reluctance to go with full integration. From my understanding they would also have to change their work methods as a central model with element borrowing isn't compatible with ProjectWise.

What is the recommended solution for software that isn't integrated? We're also going to be working with 12D (a predominantly Australian civil design package) and my original question applied to that also. We'd like to have the users check out their models each morning, work from a local location then check them back in again but the DMS folder check out fragmentation makes this cumbersome at best and almost unworkable if you have multiple references each checking out to a different DMS folder each day.

Sorry to hear you had issues with the integration, we can see if someone can look into that for you, if you would like.

But as far as using this unintegrated, you could try doing a managed export (Right click- export, then choose the first Export option) This will allow you to select a directory to export them to, and lock other users from modifying the files until they are imported back in.

If you are going to do a process like this, you should fully test the process, as using Revit with ProjectWise in this manner isn't our recommended solution especially as it relates to any changes in reference files.

      Hello Philip,

I do have questions about the statement "borrowing isn't compatible with ProjectWise". It is not entirely correct element borrowing isn’t compatible with ProjectWise. Borrowing is allowed only we recommend checking out worksets – not borrowing on the fly. Please let me know if you would like me to contact you to further discuss Revit integration.

      Thank you.
      Raul

      Hi Molly,

We ended up going with a workflow based around a managed export. Thank you very much for suggesting that option. The problems with Revit integration were experienced by one of the sub-consultants, not us. Since I haven't developed a proven workflow using Revit yet I was hesitant to push them to adopt something I wasn't 100% certain of myself. I'm certainly keen to set up a test project with Revit integration soon and once I've got all the bugs out of the system I'll be confident to roll it out on our next project.

      Hi Raul,

Thanks for your answer. I intended that more as a question than statement as it's based on second hand information. If you're happy to pass on your experiences with Revit integration in ProjectWise I would really appreciate it if you had time to contact me. Thanks very much again for your help.

      Regards,

      Philip Las Gourgues
