We are battling to use Civil 3D with Project Wise (Civil 3D versions 2013, 2014 and 2015).
We experience gradual longer waits for drawings to open as more data shortcuts are created and sometimes the data shortcuts become broken (reason unknown

RE: need examples of circular reference ..
What you've suggested seems reasonable..

Have you checked the dependency viewer?

RE: need examples of circular reference ..
We're seeing performance issues with projects I wouldn't consider multiple DS projects for.. ie. source drawings consist of 5 Alignments in one file, 1 corridor file, 1 grading file, and 1 existing ground file. They are land development sized sites as well, not long highways.

RE: need examples of circular reference .. Before we implemented Project Wise we did start to notice some small drop in C3D performance with a huge set of shortcuts in a single shortcut Project. Your answer is a logical solution that makes sense, to keep the number of shortcuts in a shortcut Project "workable". We must just come up with a split method that makes sense. Thanks again.
I think the circular reference is just plain CAD XREF with Attachment type where users are not 100% sure of what can or cannot work.

RE: need examples of circular reference ..
Our initial way of thinking was to just have one datashortcuts project per job.. but the volume of associations this would create within ProjectWise over time was staggering. This obviously led to a lengthy time to copy the data out of the data center, and down to the local PC's.. (cache servers helped here..)

I can say through our experiences, we've found that dividing up the datashortcuts in a logical manner, has greatly improved the performance. Whether this be by area, segment, contract #, etc depends on your project.

Additionally, as for shortcuts mysteriously disappearing, we've encountered similar. In our case, we found that this was largely due to poor design management.. the designers were renaming source model files.. renaming objects.. deleting objects.. etc. Never a dull moment.

We've learned (the hard way), that it's crucial to have a proper file / object naming convention, as well as to lay out a model matrix upfront. Which, to be fair, is good practice anyways.

Looking forward to your findings on the circular references...

Regards,
I finally forced AutoCAD to give me a Circular Reference error message.

Is this the Circular Reference that we are being warned about?

To get the warning I use XREF Attach Type to XREF C.DWG to D.DWG, then I used XREF Attach Type to XREF D.DWG in C.DWG

Hello circle...

Then ... I add a data reference to road C Top in D.DWG .... and

I add a data reference to road D Top in C.DWG

This is a circular reference - correct?

The dependency viewer looks like this:

Where do I view the circular reference warning?
