    ProjectWise and Civil 3D 2015

We have numerous users and projects using PW advanced integration with Civil 3D 2015.  In particular, we need the data shortcut integration.  However, this integration is, at it's best, extremely sensitive. At worst, the DSProj file (zip file PW uses to manage the shortcut XML files) gets corrupted and/or "drops" data shortcuts.

Has anyone come up with a 'best practices' document for the data shortcuts integration?  A document that almost guarantees functionality without issue?

We have come up with the following suggestions/observations for our users:

1- ensure only one person is making direct changes to data shortcut data files, so that only one person is would be making changes to the DSproj file at a time.
2- before you open a file, with the DSProj file attached, browse to the DSProj file, right-click on the file and select "Purge Local Copy", to ensure the file is the latest version from the server, when you open your CAD file.
3- if the DSProj file all of a sudden "doesn't work", close all CAD sessions, and request that the DSproj file be restored from last nights backup.

I have been wondering, with the Autodesk user's tendency to open multiple CAD files at the same time, could this cause issues?

      Morning Kirk,

I don't have a definitive answer here for you, but though I could offer at least some of my experiences here. I've seen projects be quite successful in delivering projects using C3D on ProjectWise, and I've seen the complete opposite..

We've found that the projects that are successful are well organized. Naming conventions are agreed upon in the early stages of the project, both file , and model naming. A model matrix is typically quickly developed so all parties understand how the "pieces" will all fit together. Additionally, we plan on how we'll federate the shortcuts.. this could be by discipline, area, segment, asset, etc etc.. we've learned that having one master DS file for an entire project typically isn't desirable. That being said, this all depends on your projects.

We've encountered issues with people renaming files, renaming models, deleting source models, using special characters in shortcut naming conventions, working outside of ProjectWise, dragging the files in and expecting everything to 'automagically' link up.. we've seen it all!

I'd like to caution you against points 2 and 3. Point 2 should be unnecessary.. if there is an update on ProjectWise, it will bring down the latest copy, and update as necessary. Point 3 could result in more issues than it would resolve, as you could retrieve the zip file from backup.. but you wouldn't be restoring any links to models that may have been created in the interim.. this could be incredibly troublesome.. caution here!

There are other things that you may want to look at.. eg: working directories.. but I won't touch on that here.

Hopefully some others will chime in with some of their experiences.

      best of luck,

      Paul

We are starting out with using C3D 2015 and datashortcuts in PW. We are trying to find exactly what is the best practice to get them to work.

Paul, you mention above that it is a good idea to look at the working directory. Do you have any link to more information on that topic? I have been testing to open the same file logged in with different users and I have had som problems with path to DSProj file

We re released the integration modules to support integration with ProjectWise CONNECT Edition which also support ProjectWise Explorer 08.11.11.590 which includes fixes. The version is 08.11.11.855. I’d recommend starting off with installing that first and if that does not resolve the issue refer to this greenbook and following the steps outlined in this book:

The document was put together by the developers that worked on the integration and Bentley Professional services. Stated in the simplest way, here is how to get an existing Project into ProjectWise:

      1. Drag and drop Master File with references into ProjectWise (but not the data shortcuts).
      2. Run scan ref on that folder to fix the broken x-refs links
      3. Open the master file from ProjectWise
      4. Create the Data Shortcuts
      a. Set Working Folder (dialog box should browse to ProjectWise folders
      b. Set Data shortcuts Project Folder (should be a sub folder in ProjectWise of folder above
      c. Import existing Data shortcuts folder (key in “dsimport” or select import from ProjectWise Ribbon)

If you see an error displayed during import that there were no data shortcuts in the folder. The “Import data shortcut” command needs:

      1. The Civil 3D working directory folder should be selected (not a project folder, that is nested in working directory folder)
      2. Selected working directory should contain the project folder (not the particular data shortcuts used in old Civil 3D versions. If it contains particular data shortcuts, then project should be opened with ‘Data Shortcuts Editor’ and resaved with ‘Save As’ command . This operation should produce the project that can be used with import project command )
      3. After data shortcuts are resaved to the project you will need to open this local project once in Civil 3D and do ‘Validate’ for it (this will validate project and will generate ‘ShortcutsHistory.xml’ file that is required for integration to recognize the project on import)
