    Projectwise & VPN

Running ProjectWise Explorer I also use a VPN  from  my current country of residence...

If I start my VPN connection and then try to connect to the database, it will fail. As soon as the VPN is disconnected, things work fine.

Anybody any ideas as to why?

Need a lot more info. Is the integration server and computer normally (without vpn) within the same network? Are you using a vpn to tunnel out from your normal network to the Internet?

A vpn will typically route all traffic to the vpn endpoint, if that is outside your normal network then your firewall is probably blocking the traffic from returning from the vpn endpoint to your network.

It could also be the vpn is routing DNS queries to a dns server that doesn't know the name/ip of your Projectwise servers.

You can try using the tracert command-line tool to track where your packets are being routed. Use the server IP address first, then by name.

Yes in answer to your first 2 questions. I use a vpn to access sites that are out of bounds in this country. I just realized this interference the other day, I was just curious... anyway mine is an easy fix - I turn off vpn while working with PWise. I was just curious as to why it is that way, not sure there is a fix and it's probably outside my competence anyway :) But really appreciate your answering, cheers!

      Curious,
You state that once the VPN is disconnected PW opens fine. Do you have the DNS and Datasource set to your PW Gateway server? If so change it to your Integration server or Caching Server, then connect VPN, and start PW.

      Hi Stephen,

I don't use a gateway server for the moment, just in-house on the integration server... could be that the integration server also hosts the active directory/domain part of the problem?

Setting up the gateway in your company DMZ would/should resolve not only your issue but would provide external access to your PW infrastructure and would eliminate the need for VPN. But per Kevin's previous thread, I am assuming all of this without knowing the big picture, if nothing else contact TSG they can help you with the logs, and find out where the network issue is.
