ProjectWise Full Text Search leveraging Microsoft Search Service Express not working

We outgrew the limits of the Windows Index service with a datasource hitting 10 Million documents in early October, and we've lost the ability to use full text search since.  Going on just under two months now without a critical feature.

I understand in some cases the Windows index service continues to work fine at this size; however, in our case, we tried restores along with a variety of other attempts to allow the index to rebuild but could not get it to come back online.

The alternative approach is to use the Microsoft Search Service Express (MSSE) a 2010 product that runs on Server 2008.  Working with the support team, we have been able to get this product installed and have re-indexed our full catalog of 10 Million documents.  Additionally we've confirmed from the logs and visually its indexing new documents but is still not properly tied to ProjectWise and we're waiting for assistance from development now.  Full text returns 0 results currently.

ProjectWise development - do you follow these forums?  I'm hoping you do, and I'm trying reaching out to you directly and publicly.  Full text search is something I feel is a key component to ProjectWise and in our environment it is currently not working.

Please connect with the support team and help us bring this feature back online.  Full text is dead in the water for us, and our two month anniversary of the loss of full text search for us will occur on Jan 11th (when we submitted the SR for it having failed).

No. Bentley reached out to us on numerous occasions to show us the future Azure based search indexing which looked promising, but never materialized for us. I suspect once we migrate to a hosted environment…

      Hi Andy,

Just letting the community know we are hard at work with trying to figure out the issue and will have a solution for Andy. Once we do we will make sure it's well defined and documented (Fixed in a build) so future issues like this DO NOT arise.

      Thanks,
      Ranveer

Consider this a cautionary tale of not allowing your data source sizes to grow to large if using either the Windows Index, or the SharePoint search services.

I think its worth publicly updating this post as we approach the 18 month anniversary of NOT having full text functional for our Project Wise implementation. Since this original post on Jan 2016, despite the efforts of the Bentley Support group, full text search has never functioned again for us. We called this potential issue out to Bentley ahead of the loss of the service during an on-site health check in 2015. We were assured it would be fine, and if the native indexing service failed, we would be able to switch to the SharePoint indexing service - which we attempted to do, but it has never worked.

This is not to say Bentley support didn't spend countless hours with us trying to engineer a solution, indeed support was responsive and provided every effort to return enable the functionality. However, the end result is that 17 months later today, we still don't have the capability to do full text search of the data we have in Project Wise, which lowers the value of the system to us.

We're coming up on our two year anniversary of full text going offline for ProjectWise... we still do not have full text working.

No.  Bentley reached out to us on numerous occasions to show us the future Azure based search indexing which looked promising, but never materialized for us.  I suspect once we migrate to a hosted environment we'll have the option again for full text search, after 3 years without the feature.  Time flies.
