    sheet set keeps opening/checking out

We are having a serious issue with SSM in projectwise. We want to stop the dst file from opening when we check out a drawing that's contained in it. It's causing issues because people don't realize they are checking out a file so they don't check it back in and others think they are making edits to a read only version and are wondering why others don't see they're changes.

Prior to projectwise, we could just set the autocad variables sslocate and ssmautoopen to 0. However those variable don't have any impact when projectwise is involved.

My DMS variables are as follows...

    REFTIME 5
    REFMODE 1
    REFMISSINGMODE 1
    REFPATH 0
    REFRELOADMODE 0
    PLOTTINGMODE 1
    ATTACHMODE 1
    SHOWSFM 1
    SHOWMISSINGSHAPES 1
    ETRANSMITMODE 1
    SHEETSETMODE 1

    Could somebody please help?

As you have described, the default behavior in ProjectWise when opening a sheet set member is to check out the Sheet Set file.

It is a different workflow than most AutoCAD users expect.

Once the file is open you can switch to ProjectWise and check the file in. Once everyone understands that they need to check the file out make the changes and check the file back in. Things will smooth out.

Making sure that ProjectWise displays who has the file checked out will help communication.

An Enhancement request has been filed asking that this behavior be investigated and changed if possible to be more like the native AutoCAD behavior.

Meanwhile there are a couple of tools you can enable that may make things better for your users:

      • They can user the Local Document Organizer to manage their copy outs and to check out / in files.
      • You can turn on the User Setting "Show Local Document Organizer on Log Out" located in the User Interface category. This will show users if they are leaving any files in a checked out status.
      • You can turn on the User Setting "Show Select References dialog" located in the User Interface category. This will show users what files are being copied out and which are being checked out as they open a file.

Hopefully some of these suggestions will help.

That's disappointing. Hopefully the enhancement request process doesn't take long.
I understand that with some diligence, we should be able to work around this drawback but the fact is it's been almost 2years now and most users still don't get it and from previous experience bad habits will prevail.

I am experiencing this also and it is really annoying. Why would it be the default behavior when 99% of the time when someone opens a drawing they are NOT making changes to the sheet set file? And just about every time we open/close a drawing we need to also check in or free the sheet set file. This is a huge time waster and the workarounds they provided do not remedy that.

      Hi,

This is fixed in the latest ProjectWise Explorer client.  A new DMSSET variable was introduced called shared sheet set.  When this is set to 1, the dst file will not be checked out until an editable command is invoked (create sheet, rename sheet, etc).  The latest PW Client install is compatible with all of the Select Series servers.  Please see this link for more about the latest ProjectWise Explorer.

      Regards,

      Phil

Thanks for the reply but this still doesn't seem to be working for us. We have version 08.11.11.590, though I'm not sure how to check if this is the latest version or not. If you're referring to the SHEETSETMODE variable ours is already set to 1 and changing this to 0 or any other number seemed to make no difference.

Although changing it to 0 did invoke an Open Sheet Set dialog box, but even if I canceled it Projectwise still showed the sheet set checked out.

      Hi David,

You will not have the SHAREDSHEETSET variable available unless you install the latest PW Explorer version, 10.00.01.67. This is the upgrade path for existing SS4 users. It is not the CONNECT Edition. If you have the CONNECT licensing agreement, than the CONNECT Edition features are available to you in that build. If you do not have the CONNECT licensing agreement, than those features are gated and not available to your users. In the post I referenced, it states:
"This release has a new license capability and it will accept Select entitlements (V8i passport) or a CSS entitlement (CE Visa). This is the upgrade path for all existing users regardless of their contract however a CSS entitlement is required to access Cloud services. V8i Passport users will get all new maintenance and Application integration improvement of ProjectWise Design Integration."

Please install the 10.00.01.67 build to get all of the latest fixes and added features for the application integration.

      Regards,
      Phil
