Error with iModel overlay files appearing as checked out: [58015] Error Checking out a file of XXXXX. Document is not checked in.

We have recently come across an error when attempting to open an imodel overlay file. The file appears checked in on ProjectWise, however, when trying to open the file the following error message appears: Error Checking out a file of XXXXX. Document is not checked in.

After closing the error message, the file does not open but then appears to be checked out to whoever has tried to open it.

This is currently preventing us from opening several files so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's been 6 or 7 years on this post, but I may have a possible answer and wanted to post it here in case it can help anyone.

The only user I saw who was getting this error received it when trying to open a file when double-clicking it in ProjectWise (PW). What was odd is that it seemed related to the fact that he already had another DGN from PW open. Instead of opening in the same session of MicroStation, the system tried to open a second session of MicroStation - and that didn't work (I suspect it's because the build of PW he had was quite old, but don't knw for sure).

Here are the steps we took to resolve it:
      1. Reboot the PC.
      2. Open PW Explorer.
      3. In PW Explorer, go to Tools-->Local Document Organizer (LDO).
      4. See if any documents are checked out. If so, Check them in or Free them.
      5. Close LDO.
      6. Browse to the affected file.
      7. Double-click a *different* file in PW to open it in MicroStation.
      8. Now, try opening the file noted in the error message. Thing is: do *not* double click the file in PW to open it. Instead, in MicroStation, do a File-->Open and browse using the PW file dialog that comes up. Choose the file you want and click the Open button. Open any subsequent DGN files in this session of ProjectWise using this method.

This workflow enabled the user to open the file having previously received error 58015.
