No, you do not have to integrate with a ProjectWise Design Integration project to use PWDM, but since you are already a PW user, the main advantage is keeping it as the single source of your document versions that you are sending through PWDM.  The integration will also allow you to utilize your environment attribute data, and save versions of submittal documents.  May I ask why you are thinking of keeping it separate?
