where do we post requests for improvements to project wise explorer?

Project Wise explorer is displaying Document information incorrectly. In Project Wise explorer the document has a file name and the file has size (bytes). In reality, that file does NOT exists on the project wise data store. When the user tries to "work with" (copy out / view etc.) the file - an error message occurs. I issued a support request asking for any procedure that would help in preventing this from happening - SR response  - the situation is unique no such procedure exists - Really?

    ...

If possible, the developers should consider listing document file information CORRECTLY in project wise explorer - In cases where the files does NOT exists on the data store - the document in PW Explorer should display this fact .. NO FILE.

    Thx for reading.

    Kevin.

You can submit a Change Request (CR) through the Technology Support Group (TSG). Sometimes a Bentley employee will file one based on what is discussed here, or let us know that one has already been filled.

To your point. The text showing in Explorer comes from the database. That data is gathered on check-in. The file is stored on a hard drive somewhere, not in a database record. The thumbnail is stored in the database. So, something could happen to the file on the hard drive somewhere and ProjectWise not know about it until it attempted to interact with it. If they do implement something like checking the status of every file in a folder when you select it and/or check every file in a search window as it is displayed, I hope it is optional and can be turned off because I think it would impact performance.

You could write or have someone write a program that runs in off hours which checks every file and creates a report. That way you could figure out where it was happening and hopefully stem the occurrence.

To clean up the record when this occurs you have to open the properties, click on Advanced options, then select Remove. Then hit Save. That will remove the document name and set the Bytes to 0. You may be able to programmatically do this to clean them up.

      Hi Kevin,

I believe the bigger issue is what is causing the physical file to be removed from the ProjectWise storage area. Have you been able to determine why this is occurring?

Also, we have a reporting tool that can scan the datasource to find these inconsistencies, if you are interested in that, let us know. But like Brian asked, I think that its important to look into what happened to the file on the server itself.

Brian, About the cause: We often have a situation that while importing new documents, this action cannot be completed. The cause can be either:
      - time-out due to very big file
      - loosing connection with the network (due to any cause)
      - impatient user canceling the action halfway;
So the metadata get stored, but the file doesn't. The document gets stuck in 'Coming In'. It can be freed by an Administrator, but the user cannot delete it nor open it. So the Administrator has to delete it AND inform the user to retry the import. I see no use to set the file size to 0.
This annoying situation happens multiple times each week!

It would help that while importing a new document, the metadata should be stored and showed only AFTER the file is successfully stored.
Mind you, it is (at our company) not a matter of an existing file being removed - it simply never got stored.
