ProjectWise managed workspace downloading too many files

    Hi All,

Here is the problem when opening a simple 3D model file:

    • No references attached
    • Opening with MicroStation V8i using a managed workspace. The application used has no impact on the result. It does the same thing with OpenPlant Modeler.
    • Folder has 84 documents and many of them have a lot of versions.

    What happens

    • All files from the folder, including all versions of all the files, are downloaded. Even if they have nothing to do with the model being opened.
    • The total number of files downloaded is about 2900 files.
    • It takes a very long time to open the model.

Has anyone seen something like this? Would you have some suggestions how to debug this?

    Questions:

    • Why does it download all the files from the folder?
    • Why does it download all the revisions of all the files?

    Using

    • ProjectWise Explorer 08.11.11.590
    • ProjectWise Integration Server 08.11.11.605

    Regards

    Alain

At Bentley's recommendation, I’ve done some testing on our managed workspaces adding each CSB one by one until I can reproduce the problem. It looks like it happens when the application CSB is added. The only thing happening in that CSB is that variables _USTN_WORKSPACEROOT and _USTN_SITE are re-assigned to ProjectWise folders. I can’t see why that would cause every files (including all versions) in the opened document folder to be downloaded.

is there a reason you're setting those variables at all? And why in the application level? Are you pointing them to the folder where the opened document is at?

If a variable resolves to a folder location then everything in the folder will be downloaded by the managed workspace including all versions.  You can get around this by specifying a file extension (e.g. MS_CELL = folder\*.cel).  With the extension, only the current file version will be downloaded (as will all *.cel files in that folder).

Unfortunately, some variables only resolve to folders (OpenPlant Modeler has many of these as do other applications)

We use a combination of this and the exclude rules to manage what is copied down.

Dave, We also note this issue, it presented itself when there were numerous files in the folder set to a variable. This needs to be fixed!
