Files Generated Using AecoSIM On ProjectWise

    Hi All,

Forgive my ignorance, I'm predominantly an Autodesk user but I've been tasked with managing Bentley products under my current role.

Currently we are receiving quarterly charges for the odd use of AecoSIM which does not fall under our current license agreement. After some digging the reason I'm been told is the drawings sat on ProjectWise (by others) have been created in AecoSIM therefore when opening them it will default to AecoSIM.

    Few questions.

    1. Is this true?
    2. Can the files be opened in another software from ProjectWise? i.e Microstation

I've used ProjectWise in a previous company but I was working mainly with Microstation and uploading to the CDE.

    Thanks,

    Arron

It's possible to set files to open in aecosim from Projectwise. I'm not sure if aecosim has additional file types other than dgn but it's also possible to set dgns to say they require aecosim. However if aecosim is not installed on the machine, it either won't open or will ask what product to use. It won't say you've launched aecosim and count a license for it.

So basically the problem is tangentially Projectwise, the real problem is users with aecosim installed that don't need it. On select sever you can run a report on who and what machine is running it. Uninstall aecosim on those machines.

If you really do have aecosim files, I'd ask on the aecosim forum about how to use them.

I just checked my Dev datasource, there are 3 AECOsim applications listed in the default Applications configuration:

      • AECOsim Building Designer
      • AECOsim Building Designer - Energy Simulator
      • AECOsim MicroStation

My guess is the AECOsim MicroStation should open in MicroStation without problems (although there may be elements you can't edit). Not sure on the other 2.  By default none of these are assigned extensions (that means no files will automatically be assigned this application).

Files can be individually assigned to an application. If you right-click a file, select properties you'll see the application in a drop down on the General tab. You can then manually force it back to MicroStation.

You can do a search across your entire datasource for all files assigned to the AECOsim MicroStation application, then select them all in the results window and use the Modify command to change them all to MicroStation in one go.

This won't prevent people from accidentally launch AECOsim though. Still best to remove it from their machine if it shouldn't be used.
