PW V8i logical links - how to repoint to a different DMS folder?

    MarekB.
    MarekB. over 14 years ago

Is there a way to modify the logical set of a PW file/set of files to modify the DMS number only (say replace DMS111 with DMS222), while maintaining the SAME filename.dgn (different content, of course)?

I have a large contract with multiple subs that is splitting in 2 parts, and requires some cross-over linkage to be maintained for a while until the drawings get updated. A simple copy of the whole project would not  work since various sections will reach their "ready to split" state at various times, forcing us to use files from contract A for a while, then switch to contract B when each section is ready... yes it is messy

I understand a Re-scan of existing set will not do that (since the ContractA filename.dgn actually still exists and will resolve).
Under 2004version I could drop the links in PW, then rescan to proper folders. I do not see that option after upgrade.
How can it be done in V8i?

    thanks, Marek

      Marek,

You are unable to modify the DMS number.  In V8i the option to "Release References" was removed. This was done to make sure the users removed the reference files through MicroStation Ref. Dialog.  So now if the users are not wanting the reference files to download they turn on the option in the users settings to show "Selective Set Open".  When a file is opened that has reference files attaced the user can simply deselect the file they don't want downloaded and when the file is opened the file will be missing.

If I am understanding your workflow try the following for a solution:

Turn "Selective Set Open" option on

Open a design file that has reference files attached

Deselect the reference file (in your case) that you want to replace with a newer file from a different location but with the same name

The design file will now open, at this point open up MicroStation Ref. dialog.  You will see the file is missing,

Select the missing file and choose Settings->Attachment from the Ref. Manager dialog, and then in the file name location select the browse button and browse to the different folder location that has the newer file with the same name.

Now the newer file will be attached,  I have used this method before when dealing with files of the same name but in different locations.

I hope the directions made since,

      Stephen,

I think you can do this process without doing the Selective Set portion as well.  Just open the master file in MicroStation, open the ref dialog, select the file you want to change and pick browse and navigate to the alternate location.

However, it sounds like you want to do this in a more automated way.  I don't think there is going to be a way to do this just through the standard UI, but it would be possible with a small custom utility. You could pass the list of master files that you  want to update to the tool, the tool would update the logical set used by PW to track the relationships and mark the attachments as updated so the next time MicroStation opend that file, the ref attachment in MicroStation would be updated with the new location.

      John

      John and Stephen,
      thanks for your replies.

You are correct in presuming (and I neglected to specifically say it) that this functionality is needed in batch mode; in this case  I have 300+ files in half-a-dozen folders.

Cannot agree with Stephen's explanation for total removal of Release References - if it is to protect the User, make it a profile option and let Admins decide. Would avoing having people like me *** that the UPDATED version has LESS functions than the previous one!

I am sure both methods suggested will work fine for a sigle file, but involve plenty of clicking around just for one entry...actually, here is shorter workflow I use:
      1. Check out Master+Refs
      2. Copy out the sigle/multiple Refs you are switching to, and note the DMS##### of the folder they reside in
      3. Open each Master, in Reference attachment box double-click a reference to be repointed and modify path DMS##### to include just new #### (clipboard cut and paste works fine). Close, done. Less clicking. Used this many times to fix individual files.

Again, I am hoping there may be a way for PW administrators to  "search-and-replace" a set of files IN BATCH MODE to repoint referenced *DMS11111* into *DMS22222* within file headers, then perhaps have PW rescan the whole to update logical set. I believe this ability is vital for a doc management sys, and our previous app had developed exactly that [RefUtil for TIMS]. As I am certain my office needs are not unique, this would be a welcome addition

So, John, could B. produce this "small custom utility" for a matching "small $"? :-)
      Best regards,
      Marek

      John and Stephen,

Wow, I did not notice that one.  We are in the testing phase of our V8i release and I did not see that change in the What's new.   Is Microstation V8i going to have to be put on everyone's machine to use this funtionality? or is the dll needed installed with ProjectWise?

      Dean,

So did you use the  "Release References"  option?.  In V8i you are unable to remove files from the logical set using the Set dialog.  To remove files from the logical set, you will have to use MicroStation Reference Dialog.  Thise keeps the reference file integrity in tack.
