    Revit Integration

Offline HJM over 2 years ago

I am a Revit user and I have been asked by my manager to look into ProjectWise Integration.  I have been trying to read up on the Revit Integration aspect of it prior to having access to the software.  We have ProjectWise in my office for MicroStation projects so I am familiar with the general ProjectWise workflow concept of checking Out/In CAD files and such to work on.

I cant seem to find much useful information on how to it works and how to set it up. Most of the documentation I can find is written from a MicroStation person trying to understand Revit vs a Revit person trying to learn ProjectWise.  One of the few instructional videos I have been able to find, when searching “ProjectWise integration module for Revit 2020”,  was published in 2017 and is using Revit 2011.  Very frustrating….

    • My most pressing question… We often have 2-3 users working on a Central model simultaneously. Using Local files, can multiple users work on the same Central model at the same time?
    • From what I understand there are 2 ways to open your Revit Local file, from within ProjectWise and from Revit.
      1. Do they provide the same functionality?
      2. Are there any limitations or benefits to opening one way vs the other?
    • When opening a file in ProjectWise, from what I understand, ProjectWise copies the checked out file and all the associated content locally to open. With 5 Revit links and 2 CAD links in a model, are all 8 files downloaded to the local drive?

I would be grateful for any guidance on these issues and direction to Current tutorials or instructions on how to set up and use Revit in ProjectWise.

      Hello,

Here are the answers to your questions:

      1. If the central model is saved in ProjectWise Explorer, several people can work on the same central model by creating Local copies of the Central file (the same way it is with native Revit).
      2. As long as Revit files are located in ProjectWise Explorer there is not much difference whether you open the file from the Revit or the ProjectWise Explorer. the only difference is that when opening from ProjectWise Explorer you might set up a program association to indicate which Revit version the document must be opened with.
      3. If you open a master file for editing (not as Read-only) the file is downloaded and marked as checked out (locked for other users) and the references are being downloaded without locking them for other users (copied out) unless you specify otherwise. You may enable a setting to leave the local copy in which case only the updated reference information will be downloaded.

For more information regarding Revit Integration, I would as well as Mark suggest you look into the documentation:

      Hi,

Using Revit in ProjectWise can be a pretty challenging exercise.  From my understanding of the trials that have been done in different organisations I have worked is it is better to host the RVT file in an associated BIM360 storage and then user the configuration in the integration to push content back to projectwise.  This is also covered in a PDF I have attached.

Another tool that might provide some options could be ProjectWise Drive.  I know the later iterations have the ability to create multi user sessions for o365 documents so it would be interesting if there was an opportunity to set this up for RVT files.

      Kind regards

so for point 3.... There is an option to copy or not copy the files to the local drive?  my concern is copying six 200+mg files (Working and 5 Linked) to my local could quickly fill up my local drive if i'm working on multiple projects.
