What does the E icon mean on the Projectwise thumbnail?

There are no files reference or raster files attached.

Icons from Windows 3.1 probably should be updated with more resolution and artistic skill.

Hello Kelly,

The funny little "black and white box" on the lower-right corner of the Document Icon is a "Reference Tree", which indicates that the Document contains ProjectWise-aware References. If you right-click on one of these Documents and choose Set > Show References, you should see a new window appear (for the selected Document) listed all "known" References.
