[PW Explorer 10.00.03.434] Questions about Renditions?

We are partnered with another firm, and are using PW Explorer (10.00.03.434) to access their project data.

We are unable to effectively create renditions. The files (Arch D Sheets) are creating 8 1/2" x 11" PDF sheets. According to their PW team, no other collaborators have this issue, and I am not getting a lot of help from them. How are renditions created, and what sort of resources are set up for the printing defaults? Is that something that I (the client, with only Explorer) could adjust? If not, could you help me with the correct phrasing of my issue to get the PW Admin's attention? PDF

This may not be related, but I am trying to set up an IPlot set to get something out the door. That has its own issues (my reference clip boundaries are not respected) but at least the sheet is the right size. Any suggestions there would be welcome...PDF

I can print reasonably well from Print Organizer, but that does not fill in any of the title block tags (of course). Again, any suggestions would be welcome.

    Thank you.

If you are using sheet models Renditions will use the Printer form on the server that has the same name of the sheet size (not the actual size numbers, just the name) . If the server does not have that form name you will get a letter size pdf.

Presumably you're name is "Arch D". I checked my server it does have an Arch D form size, however apparently it was created by one of the printer drivers I have installed on the server and not created either by me or built into Windows. So if they didn't create their own Arch D, or install a printer driver for a printer that created it for them, then this is the problem.

      Fixes:

      1.  They add Arch D to their server
      2. You find out what name all those people that are working are using, add that name to your sheetsizes.def file, then change all your sheet models to that name.

Here's the Arch D definition on my server.

Well...we aren't using sheets, so I'm sure that doesn't help. There's a plot shape to create the printable area. It works enough to select the correct region to print, but the page size is wrong.

I do (in theory) have the proper printer driver with the correct page size defined. I have no idea how anything is defined on their server.

My other, related, question may be - does everyone on the project need to have this special printer installed just to be able to create renidtions? I was under the impression that the rendition process was handled on the server end, and that I only needed the special printer to make changes to the IPlot file. I've worked with other firms on ProjectWise, and renditions were created seamlessly - no effort required on our part. Because of that, I'm not sure if the problem is with me or them, and I'm not sure what to request from them to fix it.

Everything for renditions is server side, you don't need anything on the client except Explorer to submit the job. Since you aren't using sheets you'll have to learn a bit more about renditions (sorry).

Renditions is ProjectWise InterPlot running on a server. InterPlot, and therefore Renditions, does not support the classic Bentley printer driver .pltcfg Printer Driver. Instead the functions the .pltcfg provides are spread out over a .set file and either (or both) a microstation pen table or design script. One function (the dot/dash pattern for line styles 1-7) can only be done in a design script.

The problem here most likely exists in the .set file. Which .set file you are using is set by the Presentation profile component (unfortunately it doesn't tell where that set file is at). That set file sets the page size when there isn't a sheet definition to go off.

I assume they've already verified you're using the correct Presentation profile component (Renditions can let you select your own or be hard-coded to one option).

If you want to check the set file yourself, you'll probably need ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer installed on your computer. The license for it is included in ProjectWise Explorer so there isn't an extra cost for that. (Install the latest connect version, even for v8i microstation). Once you have Organizer you'll need to know which set file they are using. once you have that, you can make a copy of it into your own area and then open it from Organizer (under Edit > Settings File > Edit...)

The page size is set in the Iplot Section, under the Layout tab. Note that the papers sizes available in the drop down are determined by the printer drivers you have installed on your computer. The list the person creating the set file may have been different, it should show you their choice (can't remember if it gives an error). All that matters is the paper size set actually exists on the Rendition server. Local settings don't matter except for what's available to pick in the list.

The only reasons I can think of why others would work where it doesn't work for you: 1) Somehow you're being given a different set file than them, 2) They are all actually using sheet models, 3) they are using IPS files.

#3 gives rise to a possible fix if they still refuse to work with you any further. IPS files are InterPlot's (mostly) equivalent version of the pset file. Unlike pset files, Renditions actually work with IPS files. IPS files stores all the settings that get applied via a set file in the IPS itself, so the Rendition server will use all the settings you've put in the IPS file instead of the ones in the Presentation setting. Additionally you can actually test the output on your computer by sending to PDF from Organizer.

If you want to go down this road, you can create your own SET file. You will want to create a set file with an Iplot section and at a minimum probably set:

      • General tab: Microstaiton pen table and/or design script
      • Area: Plot Area. Click the Describe Plot Shape button and set up how to identify the plot shape (I usually use level name, color/weight/style and turn on both master and reference options)
      • Layout: Set paper size (I'd probably start with "Arch D" and if it fails on the Rendition server ask them what to use), turn on use full paper size, turn on maximize
      • I leave everything else blank

Save that set file and then apply it when you add sheets to your IPS file. Save the IPS file in ProjectWise. Once it works from your machine, right-click and do Create Renditions.

This is not a quick solution as you'll need to work your way through Iplot organizer, but it's close enough to print organizer it shouldn't be difficult.

Tips: If you set color/weight in the pltcfg, you can import those from the pltcfg into your MicroStation pen table. You'll get metric units for the weights but I just ignore that. If you use custom stroke patterns for line styles 1-7 you have to set those in a design script. If you need this I can tell you how to make it if they don't have one available for you to use already.

You will probably get more accurate responses if you post your own question. Make sure you include the software you are using, the versions of the software you are using, and how you are plotting (Iplot, Print Organizer, etc.)
