Make a copy of a file in the same folder

    Hi,

I need to make a copy of a Microstation file in one of my ProjectWise subfolders. The original file and desired copy need to be in the same folder. Then, I want to edit the copy version without changes to the original file. Would you please tell me how I should do it? Thanks.

couple of options and note that creating a copy requires having the Create permission (which is different from the modify permission). Below assumes you want 2 copies side-by-side where both are editable and any references to the original file still point to the original file. If you want a version of the file has the same name but you can open a read-only copy of the old version, you want to create a version instead (right-click > New > New Version).

      Probably the simplest is:

Right-click the file, select Export, do a Send To Folder and put the file on your desktop. Rename the file as you want on your desktop. Then drag the file back into ProjectWise folder.

If you want the more "official" way (but annoying):

You can either right-click the file and select Copy, then right-click the folder and select Paste.... Or you can start dragging the file, hold down the shift key, the arrow cursor will get a little + on it to indicate you're making a copy, and drop it in the same folder.

By either process because there is a file with that name already in the folder you will be prompted what you want to do. You want to select "Create a new document". After selecting this you'll be asked how to create the new document. Note there are 2 tabs, one for setting the name of the document, and the other for setting the name of the file.

On the Name tab, select Change the name and type in the Format field type your new name (with the file extension! if you want Name and File Name to exactly match)

On the File Name tab, select Change the name and type in the Format field the new file name (WITHOUT THE EXTENSION). The File Name tab retains the current file extension. If you type the extension in this field you'll end up with a file name ending with .dgn.dgn.

After setting both, click OK. File copy will be created.
