PWE/IPO: "All renditions and distributions are up to date"? except they aren't

    They most certainly are not...

I am working with a partner firm over ProjectWise Explorer (10.00.03.434). This project also uses Interplot Organizer (10.00.02.29). I am not sure which product is to blame...So I'll start here. If I need to take this to the plotting forum I will.

I have set up a number of fresh, new IPS files for various portions of our plan set. They have been created, one after the other, using the same settings. When I right-click on any of these files and select "Create Renditions..." I get the proper dialog box, the rendition gets sent, and I eventually get the email that "Job Execution Complete". Fantastic!

Except for one file. I get the dialog box, the rendition appears to be sent, and I get an email that tells me:

"All renditions and distributions are up to date"

There is no previous rendition of this set. There is no current rendition of this set. There is no rendition of this set whatsoever. There are no error codes or error messages. No indication that anything is wrong...but something is definitely wrong.

Has anyone seen this message before? Does anyone have any idea how I might begin to troubleshoot something like this?
    Thank you.

Since you have InterPlot Organizer all setup, what happens instead of doing a Create Rendtion you do an Export to PDF instead? That'll test everything locally and might give you a better error message (or any error message)

      That's a head scratcher.

The intended path that would result in a "all renditions and distributions are up to date" job status is a stored job, created in iCS Administrator and (usually) set to run on an automatic schedule. Stored jobs can be configured to run in either "incremental" or "full" mode. For incremental stored job runs, a great number of checks are made to see if each master document in job's input set, and the references in its logical set, and all of the distributions previously performed for that document, are up to date. If that's true for every single master document in the job, then no work needs to be performed for that job run. The "up to date" notification is sent to the email address of the PW user associated with that stored job.

A rendition request submitted from PW Explorer is always run as a brand new job, with every document in the job's input set always being processed. There's never any prior history for anything to be "up to date" and so that particular notification should never be sent.

That said, in the code, the "all renditions and distributions are up to date" notification appears to be sent by the server under any condition if, after scanning the input set (which can get complicated since it can contain multiple saved searches, recursive folder iterations, flat sets, etc.) no master documents were found. The assumption is that this condition would only be reached by an incremental stored job.

Things get complicated with IPS files. I ran a test, creating an Empty.ips containing no rows, and submitted a rendition request. The email notification was a specific error: "The IPS file "Empty.ips" is empty." So that's not the explanation, and I wouldn't expect your IPS to be truly empty anyway.

My next test was to create and save an IPS with a single master DGN, then delete that DGN document, then submit a rendition request for the IPS. I received the "everything up to date" email notification. So this look like an unanticipated condition that's passing through error handling code that's making the wrong assumption. I know InterPlot Organizer is supposed to have code to handle moved/renamed master DGNs inside an IPS, but it may not work as expected if the entire contents of the IPS no longer exists.

As Kevin suggested, try opening the IPS file in interactive InterPlot Organizer as the same user (e.g. you). If all of the DGNs have been deleted, you should get a dialog message to that effect. Correcting the problem and resaving the IPS would hopefully resolve the issue. If InterPlot Organizer opens without any messages, and you can preview the DGNs, then I have no explanation. At that point, a support ticket would be in order.

Well, it's not that - all the files are definitely there. I made the IPS myself while working in these files - they have not been deleted.

I can open the IPS and preview the files. I was actually able to print the IPS, but that still gave me unexpected results. The file was created and printed properly, however it took forever (until I had to Cancel the job hours later so I could log off for the day). But after cancelling, I saw there was a PDF created and it appears to be correct. This was printing from within the IPS file, not creating Renditions.

I will let our client's Tech guy know that he needs to file a service ticket. I don't think there's any point in my doing it because I will have no authority or permissions to actually DO anything. Thank you.

Another possibility, though feels unlikely, is that the IPS exclusively consists of master documents that are not managed in ProjectWise.  The IPS would work on your PC because Organizer could find the files locally, but would not work on the iCS server.  iCS logging on the server would reveal that, but I believe it's another scenario where, if that's the case for _all_ the documents in the IPS, the misleading "everything up to date" email notification would be sent.
