    New ProjectWise Datasource

What are some of the benchmarks being used when deciding to create a new datasource? Is it typically when a size limit has been reached or maybe new security policies require a brand new datasource. In my experience, I have seen datasources created for various reasons, sometimes by a companies organizational units (Transportation, Government, Document Controllers) or Projects where one datasource will house a project which will span 10 years, have multiple contractors, and tight security and another datasource is used to house several smaller projects. Any information on this is appreciated?

For us the decision is usually for administrative reasons rather than size based. We initially (over 10 years ago now) went with a datasource per project but that quickly became untenable. Because of how our organization lays out we then decided on a datasource per geographic region. This has worked out pretty well. Having several big datasources gave us some flexibility in how we handled our database servers and also administrative tasks and kept the top level folder structure somewhat in control. Also if we ever wanted to delegate (or were forced to) PW Administrator tasks we could limit the scope of those abilities.

If you're hosted I really wouldn't worry about the performance side so much. For larger companies I'd probably still consider having multiple datasources broken up along how the company is organized and how you might want to scope administrator access.

We do still occasionally spin up a project only datasource but this is almost exclusively when they ask for special security configurations.

Thank you Kevin, this information can help steer us in the right direction when it comes to making new datasources.

Jutin,  We agree with Kevin's observations. Over the past 12 months, Managed Services has helped GHD migrate our PW infrastructure to four global locations.  With MaS now responsible for ongoing performance, considerations for requesting new datasources may include:

      1. Specific client/project requirement.
      2. A significant change to the delivery approach (Structure, Services, Security) may pose issues to other existing projects in a datasource.
      3. A country based data sovereignty requirement
      4. Performance issues associated with datasource size.  (Which we expect MaS to be monitoring)

The most important consideration is the latency chestnut and the effects on database performance.  With a global workforce, presenting project content in locations that optimise latency effects for an entire project team is paramount.

      Regards,  David
