How can I open open locally saved drawing with ProjectWise managed workspace?

We have a ProjectWise managed workspace, that we use when editing drawings in ProjectWise.

Occasionally, I want to save a copy of a file locally to experiment or demonstrate a skill without risk to changing the ProjectWise version.

In other words, sometimes I want to edit an non-managed exported drawing.

Is there a way open a dgn on my C drive using a ProjectWise managed workspace?

Right now I always get an error that the workspace the dgn was created in is not available

    Hello Christopher,

    I believe that you cannot do this (been I will since working with a fully Managed WorkSpace-based Work Area though). You would need to "recreate" your WorkSpace outside of ProjectWise. Additionally, you would need to export your WorkSet Configuration and DGN WorkSet Files...or recreate them as well. I am happy to be wrong though.

    I didn't thoroughly test this method but it appeared to work for me (in MicroStation connect at least)

    1. Open a file from ProjectWise with the managed workspace
    2. Go to open a file and hit cancel on the ProjectWise explorer dialog
    3. The regular file browser* should open, use that to open the file on your hard drive
    4. When I did this with one of the example files from MicroStation Connect it prompted me to change the file branding from the example workspace to the one i tested with

    I selected to use the active workset (which is the managed workspace I'm using) and none of the workspace changed but the file opened. That's as far as I tested.

    Oh, the * on "the regular file browser will open" because this can be disabled by PW Admins. If it doesn't appear for you you'll need to contact them to allow it.

    This does seem to work as a workaround.

    There is a caveat, the drawing I open in ProjectWise has to be a checked out and editable drawing i.e. not view or open as read only.

    Otherwise, MicroStation appears to stay stuck in read only mode.

    I am lazy :-D so I still wish I could just open directly from C drive, especially for opening multiple local drawings at the same time.

    But it is nice to at least have a workaround.

    I was afraid this might be the answer.

    Because of our strict cyber security, I can't add anything to the program files folders, which would make this even more difficult.

    Also, our workspace files are very fragmented, and despite my complaints, I can't convince folks to clean it up (lots of files that arn't used anymore at all).

    I think I could get it done, just would take lots of effort.

    I'll keep this idea in my back pocket though.
