How to renumber a drawing in ProjectWise to a drawing number that has already been used for a drawing that was issued but is now withdrawn?

A large set of drawings were prepared and issued but it was then spotted that some of the drawing numbers were wrong. We now need to renumber some of the drawings, however, Projectwise will not let us assign a drawing number if that drawing number was previously used by another drawing (even though that drawing is no longer used/withdrawn/has been given a new number itself!). It is almost like Projectwise has 'blocked' the use of any drawing number if that number has been historically used.

If you used Document Code to generate your number, what happens if you clear the code before you try to renumber something else to the desired number?

Once a document using a document code is versioned, the document code is also transferred to that version.  Removing the document code from the active version does not remove the document code from the previous versions, as all attribution in the version(s) become read-only.

In our experience, the only available options are:

      1. Remove all previous versions of the document (undesirable)
      2. Export all versions of the document using the Import/Export tool, modify the document code attribute (and any attributes that were used in creating the document code), and then import the changes, updating the attribute fields (messy & error prone)

Document code is a great feature and does exactly what it's designed to do - ensure document naming uniqueness.  But it's tedious to manipulate once versions are generated.

      HTH

      Regards,  David

Thank you Stephan and David for your responses.

I think there is a potential solution. The 'Document Code' created for a drawing in Projectwise is locked out of use permanently once it has been assigned to a drawing and this can not be changed, however, we can change the 'Client Document Code' (that is what external audiences would see) as we see fit. This would solve the problem for all external audiences/clients/people and they would not know the 'Document Code' is different to the 'Client Document Code'.
