How to determine number of PW Passports needed?

    Steve Elchert
Steve Elchert over 14 years ago

I am looking at two Named User Reports in SELECTserver to try to determine our client usage.

The Daily Named User License Usage report is showing anywhere from 2 (weekends) to 75 users.

But when I look at the Monthly Named User License Usage report, it shows about 170 users.

From Bentley's perspective, the higher number is better.  But if we are trying to right-size the number of passports maintained on SELECTserver, what are we supposed to use as our target?

To complicate matters, some of our usage is by infrequent WEL users through a PW "Logical" account where they share read-only access.  I think the newer releases of ProjectWise are planning to use some form of web license to deal with occasional viewers of documents with PW web parts or WEL.

What criteria is SELECTserver using to determine whether usage has been exceeded for ProjectWise clients?

      Steve,

The End User License Agreement says that each user/person that accesses ProjectWise is required to have Passport.  I believe that recent SELECTserver releases have a ProjectWise Passport report that allows you to see the unique users that have reported Passport usage since a given date or between two dates.  Understanding there is some turnover in a organization, the uniqueness is counted over the duration of a SELECT contract.

In V8i, a new read-only web server license, known as a ProjectWise Web View Server was introduced.  Users accessing ProjectWise throguh this readonly web interface are not required to have a Passport, therefore allowing large numbers of infrequent or "casual" users to access information without adding to the Passport usage.

      HTH,

      John

Is there somewhere I can read more about this Projectwise Web View Server?  And are these read only licenses free or have a reduced cost from a typical Projectwise Passport.  This is something our company would be very interested in and could expidite our upgrading efforts to V8i.

Below is some information on ProjectWise Web View Server.  Short answer on the licenses is that this is a server right to run license that removes the requirement for users accessing ProjectWise through its read-only interface to have a Passport.  The "break-even" point here from a licensing perspective is about 200-250 potential users.  More then that and ProjectWise Web View Server becomes a financially better alternative.

      HTH,

      John

      ProjectWise Web View Server Description:

The ProjectWise Web View Server extends any ProjectWise deployment by providing individuals with web browser access to view ProjectWise managed content. This will make it easy for any number of connected users to access and view work in a read-only mode using Internet Explorer. And as the access is likely to be infrequent, and will always be to consume rather than collaborate on ProjectWise managed content, there will be no requirement for a user to possess a ProjectWise Passport. ProjectWise Web View Server uses the same infrastructure and Web Parts as the PW Web Server, but simply limits them to read-only access and removes the PW Passport reporting requirement. ProjectWise Web View Server requires a Right to Run Server license.

      Frequently Asked Questions:

      1.     Why was the ProjectWise Web View Server product created, who is the target audience?

      a.     The PW Web View Server was created for organizations that have large numbers of users that need to access/consume(read-only) content stored in ProjectWise Integration Server, but don't need to contribute information. This access is often infrequent, so obtaining PW Passports for all of those users can deter organizations from expanding ProjectWise access beyond the core engineering team.  This is often the case in larger owner/operator organizations like utilities, municipalities and facilities(like airports or factories/plants).

      2.     How does this product(PW Web View Server) differ from the existing ProjectWise Web Server?

      a.     As stated in the Product Description above, the ProjectWise Web View Server provides read-only(view) access to content managed be ProjectWise Integration Server.   PW Web View Server delivers the same Web Parts as the PW Web Server does, except those Web Parts are limited to read-only operations. As with the existing PW Web Server, the PW Web View Server requires a PW Publishing Server to enable browser-based viewing of DGN/DWG files.

      3.     What kinds of actions/operations are considered "read-only"?

      a.     Users will be able to perform operations like; navigate folders, perform searches, view document properties and audit trail information, download documents, view DGN/DWG files(with PW Publishing Server), print DGN/DWG files from VPR viewer(with PW Publishing Server), design compare(with PW Publishing Server and InterPlot server) and send links to other users.  Operations considered to be write operations and are NOT available using PW Web View Server include; creating folders/documents, modifying properties of folders/documents, check out/in documents, redline DGN/DWG files, moving/copying documents between folders,  or deleting folders/documents.  These are not meant to be exhaustive lists of capabilities, but rather to provide examples of operations allowed and prohibited.

      4.     Can users redline with PW Web View Server?

      a.     No, PW Web View Server is completely read-only. This means no redlining, state changes, document  upload, etc.  User will be able to navigate PW folders, view document properties, design compare(with PW Interplot Server and PW Publishing Server), search, and download documents as well as perform any other read-only operation normally available in PW Web Parts.

      5.     Why does PW Web View Server cost more than PW Web Server?

      a.     Users accessing PW Web View Server do not need a PW Passport, this means that PW Web View Server provides nearly unlimited numbers of users access to ProjectWise managed Content.  The Annual Subscription cost for PW Web View Server Right to Run License is approximately the SELECT cost for 250 PW Passports.  This means that for organizations that believe that they will have more than 250 different users access PW Web View Server at some point, PW Web Viewer Server becomes a cost saving option.

      6.     Can an organization have both PW Web Server and PW Web View Server installed?

      a.     Yes, it is expected that organizations will want to provide both full web access and read-only web access to different groups of users. An organization can deploy both PW Web Server and PW Web View Server and have users access the appropriate web site for their needs.

      7.     Will PW Web View Server require an additional physical server?

      a.     It is our expectation that both flavors(full access and read-only) of PW Web Server can be run on the same hardware, of course, the organization will need to have RTR licenses for both.

      8.     Will PW Web View Server be available for use with PW V8 XM Edition?

      a.     No, this is a new product that will only be available as part of a ProjectWise V8i implementation.

      9.     If I use PW Publishing Server will the PW Web View Server won't that report a PW Passport usage anyway for that user?

      a.     Publishing request made to PW Publishing Server from a PW Web View Server site will not report a Passport usage.
