Who's using PW V8i out there?

I'm a few months behind on my V8i test environment (difficult to find eval servers without $$) but I'm curious to know who is using ProjectWise V8i in a production or a test environment.

      We are in production now.

10 datasources (9 Geographically dispersed servers) and upwards of 1600 workstations deployed so far. We upgraded everybody from PW 2004 mid-June in a weekend and do/did the client upgrades (MSXM, NVXM, POXM and PWV8i) via push technology.

After several months of testing and preparation, we migrated from V8 2004 to V8i about a month ago (10 datasources with around 100k docs each, upgraded about 1600 clients in the span of a weekend). V8i has been more stable, and so far, we've not run into any real hurdles with it. If you've got any customizations you're using from a prior release, you'll need to recompile and test those.

Some of the things I really like about V8i are:

      1. Much better View/Column handling (in the datasource, not the .brg).

      2. Photo Preview tab. Love this feature, hope it gets expanded to vector graphics (though I realize the difficulty of that, with references, cell libs, workspaces, etc).

      3. A much-improved check-in dialog (though I could do without the "create new version at check-in" option and right now, there's no way to disable that option in the dialog programmatically).

      4. Delta File transfers. File transfers overall seem much faster.

Now for the not-so-pretty. Beware of MIME types (a new doc attribute that gets set as part of the dmsconv). Our conversion didn't set the MIME type right for about 2/3 of our images in a couple datasources, which Photo Preview is dependent on. Also beware of MIME type issues between V7 and V8 files if you've got both file types and use title block tag cells, because an incorrect MIME type will make the data exchange fail (we have a lot of V7 files that end up looking like they are missing the data entirely because the file got a V8 MIME type somehow during the conversion).

If you do the upgrade, I'd strongly advise you review the PW implementation guide for V8i, and it doesn't hurt to write out your own upgrade process, step by step, and test it a few times. This was by no means a simple upgrade, but with diligent planning, it went relatively smoothly. The server upgrades are relatively straight forward. The client software upgrade is where things most often went wrong. If you've got a large install base like we do, you'll have to figure out how to manage that through automation if possible (we've got push ability through some tools in our AD).

Please note that I post here on a voluntary basis and am not a Bentley employee.

It's good to hear that there's been some PW2004 to PWV8i migrations.  We have already migrated 2 projects from PW2004 to PWXM with few problems.  Our largest project office has stayed in PW2004 (and MSV8) and is ready to jump to V8i so that's the plan.

I don't think we'll have issues with mime types since there aren't any V7 files to deal with.  We didn't have mime type errors with our 2004-XM migrationsthat I'm aware of.

I think there's more V8i installations out there that have yet to respond.  Mr. Pace, what have you got to tell us???

we've been using it since it shipped.  been pretty good, especially since the last select release.  MIME type issues we ran into were mainly with AutoCAD files and different versions.

BTW, I highly recommend looking into some sort of  virtualization technology for dev servers.  Very easy to quickly bring up a few dev servers and reset them back or delete them when dev is done.

We're using virtual for production servers as well but that's more of an investment than a simple dev setup.

Do any of you work with multiple environments within your data sources?

The organization that I am working with is a large utility company.  In addition to managing about 800K engineering records for multiple power generation plants and an extended substation distribution network, PW is also used to manage nearly 20K drawings, documenting around 60 service center buildings.  We are moving from PW2004, to V8i.  The current configuration does not use multiple environments.  All documents are held in a single data source and a single environment.

Currently our PW implimentation team is evaluating the idea, however there isn't a lot of middle ground in the debate. Several of my colleagues are afraid that "more environments = more work" for data admins.

What are your experiences and lessons learned?

Can anyone help me form a Pros & Cons list for using multiple environments?
